What the Plot of the ‘SNL’ David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special Will Be
Saturday Night Live is producing an animated Halloween special based on their David S. Pumpkins character. So how is this brief sketch going to work as a full special?
According to Deadline, the half-hour special will be set in a suburban town on Halloween night. The plot will revolve around David S. Pumpkins and his two skeleton sidekicks showing a young boy and his sister the true meaning of the holiday, “answering none of their questions along the way.”
It sounds like the David S. Pumpkins special will be modeled off of similar animated holiday specials like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Just like the original sketch had Beck Bennett and Kate McKinnon to react to David S. Pumpkins’ antics, this time, the equivalent will be two young children.
Tom Hanks will be appearing in the special, both as the voice of David S. Pumpkins as well as on screen, showing up on camera at the very beginning. Mikey Day will voice one of the skeleton sidekicks, and although Bobby Moynihan recently left Saturday Night Live, he returns to voice the other skeleton sidekick. Moynihan also writes and produces the special alongside Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. Peter Dinklage will lend his voice to the special as well, presumably playing the young boy.
The David S. Pumpkins character originated in a Saturday Night Live sketch airing on the Oct. 22, 2016 episode of Saturday Night Live. In “Haunted Elevator,” a man and a woman ride an amusement park attraction but are confused by the ride’s reliance on a strange character named David S. Pumpkins, who does nothing but say his name and do a little dance along with his skeleton sidekicks.

The sketch ended up turning into a complete phenomenon, with David S. Pumpkins becoming a popular Halloween costume that year. Pumpkins would later be brought back on Saturday Night Live, but only to cameo in another sketch and not to be the center of attention. Earlier this month, Tom Hanks teased that Pumpkins would return when he shared an image of a Saturday Night Live script, and now we know this animated special is what he was working on. Funnily enough, Hanks actually didn’t like the David S. Pumpkins sketch at first, but he obviously changed his mind.
The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special will air on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11:30 p.m. E.T. on NBC.
