What to Expect With the ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Katy Keene’ Crossovers on CW

Who’s excited about The CW’s television show lineup for this coming year? Although fans will be saying farewell to shows like Supernatural and Arrow, dramas like Riverdale are returning and some newcomers are all set to join the party.

Among those in the newbie camp are Nancy Drew, Batwoman, and Katy Keene, the Riverdale spinoff. Former Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale plays the title character, a fashionista chasing her dreams in New York City.

As a part of the Archie Comics universe, Katy Keene is bound to run into some Riverdale residents, but now there’s confirmation that there will be some crossover action between franchises.

Katy Keene’s history in the ‘Archie’ comics could set things up

Originally, Katy Keene’s appearances in the Archie comics weren’t solo stories. She hung out with the Riverdale clique and about four or five years after being introduced to the world as a feature via Archie, she scored her own comic series.

She and one of her boyfriends, K.O. Kelly, were friends with Archie, Veronica, Jughead, and others in Riverdale. In her standalone comics, Katy Keene lives a glamorous life as a model, singer, and actress with a busy love life. K.O. was one of many loves, but he also happens to be a boxer. See where this is going?

‘Katy Keene’ showrunners hint that paths will intersect

Executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa is behind Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Katy Keene, which practically begs that these characters and storylines meet up at some point. It’s already known that Riverdale’s Josie (Ashleigh Murray) has packed her bags to pursue her music career in NYC, but what about everyone else in town?

Compared to Riverdale, this show takes place five years into the future, so all the characters are older. Though the writers are still working out the kinks of crossover storylines and age differences, the action is going to happen at some point.

During an appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival this past weekend, Aguirre-Sacasa and Katy Keene writer Michael Grassi touched on which Riverdale folk could pop up. Per Deadline, one of those people is Josie’s mom, the former Mayor McCoy. Grassi stated, “We love Robin Givens. She will come visit for sure.”

But that’s not all. Aguirre-Sacasa surprised the cast when he said, “We definitely will be seeing the Pussycats, but probably not in the way you expect.” It should be noted that in the Josie and the Pussycats comics, Pepper was in the band. In the TV show, Katy has a friend named Pepper Smith.

According to Decider, K.O. Kelly (played by Zane Holtz) will be Katy’s boxing beau in the new series, and Aguirre-Sacasa stated the character will square up in the ring with someone from Riverdale. Let’s hope it’s Archie Andrews.

And, given what we know about Veronica’s old life in New York, she and Katy are probably old acquaintances, opening the door for some post-high school catch-up sessions. Since The CW’s Katy Keene is aging these characters by five years, Betty, Cheryl, and more could make it out of Riverdale alive and into the city for a visit.

‘Katy Keene’ will be more lighthearted than ‘Riverdale’

Since the showrunners revealed that this series is going to be a more of a musical dramedy, it’s probably safe to rule out seeing anyone from Greendale. Unlike Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Katy Keene won’t be filled dark tones and murderous plots.

TV Insider reports that executive producer Grassi says viewers will get to know Katy and her friends as they navigate life in New York. He stated, “These friends will chase dreams, face rejection and all come together to lift each other up.”

The series pilot episode of Katy Keene will premiere on The CW in midseason 2020.
