What Was Monique Samuels’ Job Before ‘Real Housewives of Potomac?’
It’s rumored that Real Housewives of Potomac star, Monique Samuels, may not be returning for the upcoming season. A physical altercation between her and castmate Candice Dillard is said to have occurred while filming and both are now in a nasty legal battle.
Things have taken a dark turn recently but when viewers were introduced to Samuels, she was a spitfire personality who loved to have a good time. Fans loved her for her talkative nature, sense of style and her bragging about not just her current life, but also her past dealings in the music industry.
Monique Samuels pursued a rap career before ‘RHOP’
“Motormouth Mo’Nique,” as the RHOP star has called herself, once put her love of talking to good use and heavily pursued a rap career. Under the stage name “Hazel,” her skills were so good that she says she was offered several record label and production deals. Many of the opportunities she took came to an abrupt end when she realized the compromises industry executives wanted her to make.
In a 2017 interview with Bravo.com, Samuels spoke about the dangers of the music industry that she refused to take part in. “I was always asked to either change my persona or several “strings” were attached along with the opportunity,” she explained.
According to Samuels, she preferred to create fun and encouraging music with popular messages and great beats. Record label heads didn’t take to her look or sound and wanted her to be as oversexualized as other female rappers of her time or have more street appeal. “I was not about to parade around, barely clothed, singing about men and sex, she said. “I don’t have a street background so I wasn’t comfortable with giving a more “gangsta” message.”
But not all of her experiences were bad. She met and collaborated with a few of rap’s current icons. Samuels also says that she receives residual checks from music she recorded that became popular overseas. “Every quarter I receive a statement of how many plays each of my registered songs receive, along with a check,” she exclaimed.
Monique Samuels raps on ‘RHOP’
Samuels may have stopped pursuing rap as a career choice but that doesn’t mean she’s completely retired. During her first RHOP scene with the cast, she broke out into a rap, leaving her cast both shocked and impressed.
At the season 2 reunion, she prepared a rap about her experience on her debut season and how she felt about her castmates that ruffled some feathers. Samuels says that production wouldn’t allow her to do the same during the season 3 reunion so she took to her social media to share instead.
Season 5 will be Samuels’s fourth year on the show. Viewers have watched her transform from a dedicated wife and mother who managed her household, to a businesswoman in demand. She remains a big fixture in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia charity and social circle, running her husband’s foundation and sitting on a variety of boards. She also produces her own podcast and website, Not For Lazy Moms, where she dishes out advice on motherhood and manages a community message board.
