What Was Vine Co-Creator Colin Kroll’s Net Worth Before He Died?

Colin Kroll, the co-founder of Vine and CEO of HQ Trivia has passed away. Back in 2012, at the age of 28, Kroll co-founded Vine along with his partners Dom Hofmann and Rus Yusupov. The short-form video sharing service took the world by storm before Snapchat and Instagram stories swooped in and made it obsolete. Many Vine stars became full-fledged celebrities using the platform to produce and share six-second videos that played on a loop.

After Vine, Kroll did a brief stint over at Twitter and eventually landed at HQ Trivia in 2015. Sadly, Kroll’s life has ended tragically. He was found dead in New York City on Dec. 16, 2018.

Colin Kroll’s net worth and legacy

Before he passed away at the age of 34, Kroll was a millionaire many times over. The Oakland University alum who graduated with a degree in Computer Science was a brilliant engineer and spent two years at Yahoo! as their Chief Technological Officer before he went on to found Vine. At its hey-day, Vine was so massive that it had an astounding 40 million users — including former President Barack Obama.

Kroll said of Vine’s creation, “We felt that video was on the brink of becoming this new medium that everyone would use, in the same way that photos had become that medium over the previous fifteen years… We wanted to get big fast, we wanted to get this out in the world and let people connect in this way. I think it worked out really well.”

Unfortunately, Kroll’s personal issues and management style got in the way of his career. He was fired from Twitter after some female colleagues made some allegations against him. He was called, “abrasive and disinterested, and it was said that he could be verbally abusive to colleagues.” His time at HQ Trivia also had some bumps. At the top of 2018, HQ Trivia was in the Top 10 of downloaded games on Apple’s App Store. Recently, the company’s rankings had slid down between 250 and 500.

Additionally, an HQ Trivia employee had lodged a complaint against Kroll with Human Resources stating that Kroll had an “aggressive management style” which led to a hostile work environment.

Kroll’s cause of death

In the early morning hours of Dec. 16, 2018, Kroll was found dead in his downtown New York City apartment. His girlfriend had been unable to get in contact with him, so she asked the New York Police Department to do a wellness check. When the police arrived at his apartment, they found Kroll unresponsive in his bedroom. Since both heroin and cocaine were found near Kroll’s body — police have reason to believe that Kroll died of a drug overdose.

An autopsy will be performed, and the New York City medical examiner will determine Kroll’s exact cause of death.
