‘The Hunger Games’ prequel will be published in 2020

Although the film adaptations of Collins’s three books The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay have long since been released — the fourth and final installment premiered in 2015 — Collins isn’t done with her popular series.

A prequel to The Hunger Games will be available on May 19, 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What will the prequel to ‘The Hunger Games’ be about?

Collins gave some insight about the prequel in a statement released on June 17, 2019. We know the prequel will be set 64 years before Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) became known as the girl on fire. It will take place during the reaping of the 10th Hunger Games.

What Collins ‘wanted to explore’ in the prequel

Collins told fans in her statement what she wanted to explore in the prequel. “With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are and what we perceive is required for our survival,” she said.

She continued citing “the Dark Days” as the place in time where the book will be set.

“The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days — as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet — provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity,” Collins said.

A movie will likely follow the release of the book

Collins is no stranger to her work hitting the big screen. The film adaptations of her work catapulted the acting careers of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth to A-list status.

Lawrence won an Oscar in 2013 (she won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook), signed lucrative movie and endorsement deals (she’s the face of Dior), and continues to show her range in the varying acting roles she takes on.

As for Hutcherson and Hemsworth, they’ve both continued to work steadily — and very successfully — in Hollywood.

Since Collins’s announcement, the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, who produced the film trilogy has said they will likely work with the author again on a movie adaptation of the prequel.

“As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published. We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie,” Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate, said in a statement on June 17, 2019.

Because the prequel is set years before Lawrence, Hemsworth, and Hutcherson’s characters time, they likely won’t be making an appearance in the new film.

How much money did the movie franchise earn?

The Hunger Games franchise earned approximately $3 billion at the box office.
