What Will Kate Middleton Be Called When Prince William Becomes King?

When you watch Disney movies, the royals basically have four titles, king, queen, prince, and princess. But in real life, it’s a lot more complicated. Marrying a king doesn’t automatically make you a queen, just like marrying a prince doesn’t necessarily make you a princess. The science of royal titles is a lot more complicated than most people (even Brits) understand.

And if you do manage to learn everyone’s titles, pray they don’t get married or ascend the throne, because then a number of titles will change again.

What are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s titles?

Growing up, Harry went by Prince Harry. It is natural for the children of the person directly in line for the throne to have a prince or princess title. Just look at Prince William’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. And while Harry is still known as a prince, he also gained three new titles under the Peerage of the United Kingdom, Earl of Dumbarton, Duke of Sussex, and Baron Kilkeel.

His wife, Meghan Markle, who formerly was untitled, became the Countess of Dumbarton, Duchess of Sussex, and Baroness Kilkeel when she married.

Currently, their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor does not have a title. Should his parents choose to accept his title when Prince Charles becomes king, then he will be known as Prince Archie.

What will Kate Middleton’s title be?

Right now, Middleton is known as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge. When she is in Scotland, she is called the Countess of Strathearn, and in Northern Ireland, she has the title of Lady Carrickfergus.

When Prince Charles becomes king, Middleton will take on the titles of the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, which are currently taken by Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

When William eventually becomes king, Middleton will, yet again, receive a new title. Contrary to popular belief, Middleton will not be a queen. Rather, she will receive the title of Queen Consort which is common for wives of kings.

What will Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children be called?

Kate Middleton isn’t the only one who would be in for a title change when Prince Charles and Prince William take the thrones. When their father becomes king, Prince George and Prince Louis would lose their Cambridge titles and become Prince George of Wales and Prince Louis of Wales. These titles were previously held by Prince William and Prince Harry before they were married.

Princess Charlotte may be given the Princess Royal title, which has traditionally been given to the ruler’s oldest daughter. Princess Anne is the current Princess Royal. Charlotte won’t be given the title as long as her great-aunt is alive.

“It is possible in the future,” Royal Musings founder Marlene Koenig told Hello! Magazine of Charlotte receiving the Princess Royal title. “But now with gender-equal succession, I think it would be more possible to grant a peerage to Charlotte.”

When their father becomes king, a lot more will change than just names for George, Charlotte, and Louis. They will be given a lot more responsibilities and thrust into the limelight even more than they are now. But luckily, they have a while to go and another ruler to get through before they have to worry about any of that.
