What Will Season 3 of ’13 Reasons Why’ Be About?
13 Reasons Why – the Netflix original boasting a die-hard fan base and an impressive ensemble – has been renewed for a third season. The show, starring Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Alisha Boe, Justin Prentice, Brandon Flynn, and more premiered in March 2017.
Opening to impressive critical reviews and widespread viewership, the cast returned to Liberty High for season two in May 2018. Considering the first two seasons were released in the springtime, it’s likely the announcement date for season 3 will fall between March and June of 2019.
Will Katherine Langford will reprise her role as Hannah Baker? Where will the show focus the majority of its attention? Who’s going to be in the spotlight now?
‘13 Reasons Why’: seasons 1 and 2 recap
Season one of 13 Reasons Why – based on the Jay Asher book by the same name – follows Hannah Baker’s classmates in the aftermath of her suicide. A new student to Liberty High, Baker takes her life after enduring a ruthless rape and extensive social ridicule.
Hannah Baker leaves 13 tapes behind detailing the reasons why – or more appropriately, the people whom – led her to kill herself. Along the way, viewers see how each played a horrific part in her ultimate decision, and watch as they attempt to cope with her loss and their guilt-ridden consciences. The worst of them all: the man who raped her, Bryce.
Season two mostly hones in on Bryce’s trial. Accused of raping Hannah Baker, his wealthy and connected parents employ the best lawyers, and Bryce gets off virtually scot-free.
Season two also ends with Montgomery de la Cruz (Timothy Granaderos) sexually assaulting Tyler Down (Devin Druid). After facing a brutal attack, Tyler Down arrives at school with a gun, ready to inflict his retaliation on the institution that has neglected him.
While Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) talks him out of it, Clay is the one caught red-handed holding the gun when the cops arrive. So, the question is: what’s next?
What’s next for the Liberty High students in ‘13 Reasons Why?’
Season three of 13 Reasons Why will likely explore the psychological effects of social rejection and isolation. Given that Tyler Down was often seen as the “weird outcast,” his turmoil and the consequences of his decision will likely be front and center. However, Jensen is still the protagonist, so these two seem destined to share a lot of screen time.
According to showrunner Brian Yorkey:
“I think you’ll see in the balance of the episodes that it’s very much about trying to understand Tyler’s character and how a troubled young man might be driven to consider this very difficult choice.”DigitalSpy
Will Jensen, once again, play the “good guy?” Maybe Jensen will use his guilt as fuel to help Tyler. While the plot for season three has mostly been kept under wraps, we know one thing: psychological distress will underly most of the show’s trajectory. And as for Hannah Baker, her impact will be everlasting, but her screen time will be lessened.
Hannah Baker’s role in season 3 of ‘13 Reasons Why’
“I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, ‘I love you and I let you go’. If the story does continue, and certainly there is lots more to know about a lot of these characters, then the spotlight focus on Hannah Baker is probably done.”
Katherine Langford, the actress who portrays Hannah Baker, also recently posted a goodbye message to Hannah Baker on Instagram. So, as for Hannah Baker, her chapter is complete. However, her influence on the others is not, so just maybe she will appear for a flashback or two.
