What Would Really Happen If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Left the Royal Family?

At this point, there’s no denying that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are miserable as part of the royal family. How do we know this? They told us in very explicit terms that things would need to change. Either the overly aggressive press must stop harassing the Sussex family — or else.

Or else what, royal fans wonder? Prince Harry proved that he’s not above seeking legal recourse when he slapped two British tabloids with massive lawsuits. The Duke of Sussex was sending a clear message to everyone — he’s unwilling to put up with abuse.

But if it continues, and nothing gets better, will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle abandon the royal family? And if they do, will it even matter?

Royal experts think Harry and Meghan might leave the royal life

Anyone who’s been paying attention the last couple of months knows that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are miserable as working royals. These two have made efforts to shield themselves and their infant son Archie from the worst treatment by the press. But no matter what they do, it seems that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex just inspire more criticism.

In recent interviews, Prince Harry vowed that he “will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.” Meanwhile, Markle candidly explained she “wasn’t OK” in her postpartum life and that no one seems to care. Critics claim they’re overreacting, while others have rushed in to support these emotionally distraught royals.

So far, they haven’t revealed what they’re doing in the future, except that they’re taking 6 weeks off before the holidays and won’t have any royal appearances during that time.

Quitting the royal family is complicated

It might be slightly easier for Meghan Markle to leave the royal life behind. But remember, even if Prince Harry isn’t thrilled with the attention, it’s the only thing he’s known since birth. The Duke of Sussex has no idea what it’s like to be a commoner.

There are many considerations that would need to be examined before Harry and Meghan officially quit. For one, they’d no longer head up the charitable causes they’ve become so invested in. As difficult as it’s been in the spotlight, all the attention has done wonders for highlighting those charities.

“This is uncharted territory, but if they were to withdraw from public life, then the organizations with which they are associated in various capacities would be reallocated to other members of the royal family,” Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, told Insider.

They wouldn’t be part of royal festivities anymore

Prince Harry wouldn’t be the first royal to quit the royal family — his great uncle Edward VIII abdicated to marry the love of his life in 1936. But after that day, his life was never the same.

In a similar way, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would have to adjust to a new normal if they left the working royal life. They’d no longer be able to receive any money from the Queen’s Royal Grant and they wouldn’t be invited to attend royal family events, like Trooping the Colour.

It’s true that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would still have plenty of money — Prince Harry from his inheritance and Meghan Markle from her former career as a Hollywood actress. But they’d find a new status in life without the royal family name behind them.

Plus, any future children wouldn’t be royal babies, they’d be regular citizens. However, based on previous comments that could be exactly what this couple wants and needs.
