‘Justice League’: What’s Going on Between Wonder Woman and Batman?

Ever since they crossed paths in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, and Batman have engaged in a flirtatious game of cat-and-mouse.  Though we got Wonder Woman’s story in the film of the same name, we’re not sure that the Caped Crusader knows who Diana Prince truly is. Now, the pair is set to reunite again in Justice League, and we’re confident that we will be in for a whirlwind of action and emotions.

After the superheroes witnessed Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday, they leaned on one another, organizing a team of metahumans to help defend the world in the wake of their friend’s demise. Justice League will see the duo band together with Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg against Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. However, we’ll take a wild guess that more is going on between Bruce Wayne and the Amazon warrior than the film’s trailer reveals.

Recently, Ben Affleck, who portrays Batman in the DC Extended Universe, and Gal Gadot, who stars as Wonder Woman, shared what’s happening between the superheroes. Quite frankly, you can cut the sizzling onscreen tension with a knife. Here’s what we know about the relationship between the two characters in Justice League.

A deep bond

Upon spotting Diana, before knowing anything about her at all, the Caped Crusader was deeply intrigued. His curiosity only deepened after she unveiled her superpowers — and even moreso when he discovered a photograph of her, unchanged from World War II. They first connected over a counterfeit sword, but the two truly unite after the death of Clark Kent.

Gadot spoke with US Weekly about their connection. She said, “Since they’ve fought together, they know each other’s strengths. They also understand the hope Superman stood for, that was lost [when he died], so they feel that more than the others.”

Growth

Death certainly has a way of changing your perspective about things, and that’s exactly what happened to Batman and Wonder Woman. Don’t expect to see the same Diana Prince that you grew to know in Wonder Woman. Gadot explained, “She’s grown up — it’s been a century, after all! She’ll bring her specific qualities to a group dynamic, and she understands the enemy better than anyone else.”

Bruce Wayne has also altered the way that he’s approaching people, especially with his role as one of the Justice League leaders. Affleck told Us Weekly:

In Batman v Superman, he was at the end of his rope. But in Justice League he’s finding hope again. He has to open up and play well with others. He knows he needs them. He’s sort of the ultimate loner, but he’s really trying to make it work and develop a good relationship with all of them. He might be a mentor to The Flash.

What is the Justice League up against?

The Amazon princess teams up with Batman to stop Steppenwolf before he gets his hands on the Mother Boxes. If you recall in Wonder Woman, one of the Mother Boxes was unearthed during the war. Justice League producer Charles Roven explained the Mother Boxes existence to ComicBook.com, saying,

Back before history, mankind, the Atlanteans before they were underwater, the Amazonians, and actually the Old Gods, teamed together and decided that, based on an event that happened, these Mother Boxes were going to be divided between the three non-god groups.

It’s not exactly clear yet what Steppenwolf wants with the Mother Boxes, but we do know from Batman v. Superman that the Mother Box found in America was used to help create Cyborg.

A brewing romance?

Though Batman and Wonder Woman shared a brief romantic history in the comic books, the DCEU has decided not to take their relationship there — at least not yet. In the comics, despite sharing a kiss, the pair ultimately decided to remain friends.

However, things might change as they work together to save the world and gather their team in Justice League. The long-suffering WonderBat fans may finally get exactly what they always hoped for.

The perfect pairing

Whether the DCEU decides to pair off Diana and Bruce is unclear, but we do know that watching them work together will have a magical quality to it. While they have lived two very different lives, they are both ultimately seeking the same thing.

Though Bruce Wayne is older in this franchise, more war-weary and suspicious of the world, Diana represents a sense of hope and rebirth for him — one that he clings on to, even though he’s faced constant disappointment.

A singular goal

Superman’s death has led to a widespread surge of crime across the globe. Using their late friend’s legacy as a guide, Wonder Woman and Batman have vowed to combat it.

Since they share similar superhuman abilities and strength, they can confide in and trust one another, bringing each other fully into their respective worlds. Batman won’t have to hide behind his surly demeanor to protect Diana from his enemies — after all, the best thing about Wonder Woman is that she can protect herself.

As Gadot told Rolling Stone, “Being a woman is a strength, in so many ways.”

Adjusting to Superman’s return

It’s no secret that Superman will return in Justice League. After all, as we watched Diana and Bruce turn away from his grave at the end of Batman v. Superman, his coffin began to vibrate. We also know that Henry Cavill just finished doing some reshoots for the film.

DCEU has kept the details of Clark Kent’s rebirth super hush-hush, but we do know that adding the Kryptonian native back into the mix will certainly shift the dynamic of the Justice League. It may throw Batman and Wonder Woman’s relationship off-kilter once more.

In the trailer, it looks as though Jeremy Irons’ Alfred might be the first one to know of  Superman’s return, but we suppose the Justice League will reveal all when it drops on Nov. 17, 2017.
