What’s Really Going on Between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun. All of the Drama Explained
Oh, look what you made her do. Taylor Swift is feuding with someone yet again. But this feud makes all of her others look like child’s play. Whereas her beef with Katy Perry could be solved with a music video and her issues with Kanye West actually made her even more famous, starting this new drama was riskier than any that she’s had before.
So, who is Swift feuding with? Music company executive, Scooter Braun.
What happened between Swift and Braun?
The drama all started when Swift found out that Ithaca Holdings, LLC had bought Big Machine Label Group. As part of the deal, Ithaca will receive the label’s master recordings, including Swift’s master recordings from before she left Big Machine in 2018.
Swift took to Tumblr to express her dismay when she found out.
“For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work,” she wrote. “Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past.”
She went on to describe how angry she was that Braun had purchased her masters, especially after she had been bullied by two of his clients, allegedly at his encouraging, in the past.
“This is my worst case scenario,” she continued. “This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value.’ he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.”
Did Big Machine know about Swift’s feud with Braun?
In her post, Swift went on to call out Big Machine’s owner, Scott Borchetta, for being aware of the trauma that Braun had caused her but selling to him anyway.
“When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually, he would sell them,” she continued. “Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”
Since this post has gone up, social media has been ablaze with people commenting on both sides.
One celebrity who really took offense to Swift’s post was Justin Bieber, who has worked closely with Braun for years.
He posted a picture of him and Swift to Instagram, asking her to stop bashing Braun.
“What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog?” he wrote. “Seems to me like it was to get sympathy, you also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully Scooter. Anyway, one thing I know is both Scooter and I love you. I feel like the only way to resolve conflict is through communication. So banter back and forth online, I don’t believe solves anything. I’m sure Scooter and I would love to talk to you and resolve any conflict, pain, or any feelings that need to be addressed.”
Other celebs weren’t having it. Model Cara Delevingne responded to Bieber’s post.
In her comment, she called Bieber out for defending Braun.
“As you said, you haven’t spoken to her in years which means you definitely don’t understand the situation,” she wrote. “I do. Take a step back and try and learn from this. We should all be on the same team. End of story.”
Model Martha Hunt also defended Swift.
“Taylor doesn’t deserve for someone who has constantly BULLIED her to OWN THE RIGHTS to her blood, sweat, + tears. It’s not the dark ages – artists shouldn’t be held down, and I couldn’t be prouder of my friend for standing up for what’s right,” she wrote. “End of story.”
