‘Wheel of Fortune’: When Will New Episodes Air?
Here’s what we know.
The wheel has been redesigned to provide social distancing
The show’s producers, of course, are moving forward with filming by first ensuring the safety of all contestants. Social distancing guidelines, according to Deadline, are being properly observed on the show. It will remain to be seen if face masks will be worn by the contestants, as well as by Sajak and White, as well.
In March 2020, as with almost all programs, Wheel of Fortune switched to filming without a live studio audience as news of the coronavirus’ (COVID-19) growing threat intensified. Finally, the game show made the decision to stop filming altogether in the same month.
In late July 2020, producers of both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! decided conditions were optimal to safely return to filming.
A spokesperson provided a statement at that time saying, “Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are returning to the studio to tape episodes for the shows’ upcoming seasons. The productions have protocols in place in accordance with current government guidelines to protect contestants, staff, crew and talent from the spread of COVID-19.”
“While some things may have changed behind the scenes,” they continued, “and on the set to keep everyone safe, fans can expect to see the same Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! they have come to love when the season starts.”
Vanna White had just finished her debut at hosting ‘Wheel of Fortune’ shortly before the pandemic
During host Pat Sajak’s recuperation from emergency surgery in late 2019, Vanna White took over Wheel. By her own admission, it was a position she wasn’t crazy about being in and one she hopes to not return to.
She admitted to Good Morning America in December 2019 that she was horrified when she learned of Sajak’s illness – a blocked intestine – and feared it might be grim news for Sajak.
“It was horrible, just horrible,” she said of Sajak’s illness and his absence from the show. “We’ve been together 37 years, and it’s not the same — we are a team. We’re together. It just felt weird with him not being here on the set. You think the worst, because you never know when you’re going in for surgery. You never know what’s going to happen.”
Sajak got through his experience and so did White in hosting the show.
“Those three weeks without him was very hard. I really missed him,” she continued. “I just can’t imagine doing this show without him, you know? And I hope he feels the same with me.”
When will new ‘Wheel of Fortune’ episodes air?
Dates for when new games will air have not yet been announced by the production team at the beloved letter-turning show.
Most likely, the new episodes, since they’re taped for forthcoming seasons, will air for the new September season.
Pat Sajak, speaking with Good Morning America in December 2019 on how much longer he thinks he’ll be hosting the game show said, “I think I still do it at a high level,” he said. “But you know, I can’t do it another 40 years, I know that, because I’d be 110, and that would be a record.”
