Get ready, because a new season of One Day at a Time is here. The hit series is considered by many to be worth the cost of a Netflix subscription, as it proves to be an enjoyable comedy that follows a formula while also breaking boundaries. Here’s what we know about the third season:

What is One Day at a Time?

This 30-minute multi-cam Netflix sitcom follows Penelope Alvarez, a Cuban-American woman who is raising her two teenage children while living in a Los Angeles apartment with them and her mother. The show is one of the best on the streamer and has been nominated for numerous awards, including an Emmy.

Is it a reboot?

If the title of the show sounds familiar, that’s because it’s actually a reboot of sorts. The original One Day at a Time aired for nine seasons on CBS in the ‘70s and ‘80s. It was the series that made actresses Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips popular.

Both series are about a divorced both raising her two children and features a loveable superintendent named Dwayne Schneider. However, that’s where the obvious similarities end. In addition to featuring a family of color, the issues addressed are emblematic of the 21st Century. But there is certainly overlap when it comes to timeless themes.

One Day at a Time stars Justine Machado (Six Feet Under) as Penelope; Todd Grinnell (Four Kings) as Schneider; Stephen Tobolowsky (Glee) as Penelope’s boss, Dr. Leslie Berkowitz; newcomers Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz as her kids, Elena and Alex; and EGOT-winner Rita Moreno (West Side Story, among many other things) stars as Penelope’s mother, Lydia, a former dancer.

In addition to its incredible cast, the show has had many notable guest and recurring stars, including Ivonne Coll (Jane the Virgin), Tony Plana (Ugly Betty), and Phillips. Season 3 will continue this, with guest stars like Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz.

Seasons 1 and 2 were well-received

While reboots are often overlooked, critics and audiences alike were quick to jump on board for this Netflix series. In addition to its nominations, the series boasts a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. After the acclaim of the first two, it’s no surprise that One Day at a Time was renewed for a third season. Season 3 drops on February 8, 2019.

The show is breaking barriers

Though multi-cam sitcoms have been making a comeback, it can be hard to find the balance between the old after-school-special style comedies and the new, more substantial content many shows have today. While One Day at a Time is definitely a sitcom that teaches lessons every episode, it has a long arc, and the same issues are addressed in different ways over and over again.

Discussions of race, gender, sexuality, immigration, mental health, and much more are commonplace on the series. In particular, the series has been praised for Elena’s coming out storyline, as well as Penelope’s depression and anxiety tying back to her time as a nurse in the army.

How many more seasons of One Day at a Time will there be?

With the number of subjects broached, there’s no telling how many more seasons of One Day at Time are to come. Creator Gloria Calderón Kellett says that there is “a very clear vision” for Season 4 of the series and that there are plenty more storylines cooking. As long as the series continues to be a success, we see no reason why Netflix won’t renew it for years to come.
