When Is the ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Sequel Coming?

One of the greatest films of 2018, according to both popular audiences and critics alike, is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Marvel has its own share of hits in the MCU, but Sony is still holding strong to the property, even when things get shaky like they did with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker earlier this year. While the company works on ramping up its extended live-action universe with Venom, Morbius, and the like, let’s take a look at the promising expansion on the animated front.

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was released in 2018

There have been plenty of live-action Spider-Man films over the years. There have also been a good number of animated takes on Peter Parker and other characters, but most are relegated to the small screen. However, 2018 brought with it something brand new: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The animated film is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It stars a different Spider-Man who comic-book fans are familiar with: Miles Morales. In the movie, he, too, gets bitten by a radioactive spider and finds out there are a lot more “Spider people” than he’s ever dreamed of when a portal is opened.

The film went on to win an Oscar

The film features an all-star cast, including Shameik Moore as Miles, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Mahershala Ali as Aaron Davis, and many more. Into The Spider-Verse also had an incredible team behind it, including Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who are responsible for The Lego Movie.

Given all of this star power, it’s no surprise that the film was a massive hit. Despite a hefty budget, it became a critical and commercial success. Into the Spider-Verse even won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, a feat that rarely goes to anyone other than Disney.

After the excitement and praise surrounding Into The Spider-Verse, it seemed like a no-brainer that Sony would capitalize on this with a sequel. There have been rumors for nearly a year now, and finally, we have confirmation.

We know essentially nothing about the sequel, only that it’s due out on April 8, 2022, and will continue to follow Miles Morales. However, the end of the film offers a few hints, including the arrival of Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (voiced by Oscar Isaac).

There are more ‘Into The Spider-Verse’ projects in the works

The sequel isn’t the only project in the works for this new and exciting universe. First, there’s also a rumored spin-off in the works. This film is thought to be titled Spider-Women, and will feature the return of Spider-Gwen along with a variety of other female Spider-People, like Spider-Woman and Silk.

There are also other mediums to explore. Lord and Miller have reportedly signed a five-year deal with Sony Pictures Television to create multiple TV series, possibly for a new streaming service. There is thought to be another Spider-Verse project in there. But we’ll have to wait and see what’s to come.
