When Does ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Start? The Next Premiere Date Will Hopefully Come Soon
As expected, the This Is Us Season 4 finale stunned audiences across the nation on Tuesday, March 24. Naturally, everyone is looking toward the future of the Pearson family, which will pick up where we left off on the Big Three’s 40th birthday. But when does This Is Us Season 5 start? The NBC drama has already figured out the next premiere. So hopefully, we’ll see the show return with new episodes sooner than later.
The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 premiere start date on NBC
In case you didn’t know already, This Is Us has been renewed through season 6 with 18 episodes each. This means the fifth season is definitely happening. And if NBC is able to continue their production schedule for This Is Us Season 5, we’ll have an idea of the next premiere date.
The first four seasons of This Is Us were released in September. So it’s possible he fifth cycle will come back in September 2020. Nevertheless, it’s important to note the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has the entertainment industry halting production on several projects.
When speaking with Entertainment Weekly on March 17, showrunner Isaac Aptaker revealed This Is Us finished filming the fourth season finale right before the shutdown.
“We were just really fortunate where our last day of our finale was right before we all realized how absolutely serious this was and how we all had to start staying home,” Aptaker said. “So we were able to get our last day in just under the wire. Now we are on hiatus for the season.”
He then shared his hopes for This Is Us Season 5 production to start up again in the summer as planned.
“We’re all hoping that this gets resolved as quickly as possible and everyone’s is so eager to go back to work,” Aptaker said. “We’re scheduled to come back in the summer, so we have some time, and we’re hoping we can stay on schedule.”
Meanwhile, Justin Hartley — who plays Kevin — touched on the plan for This Is Us Season 5. But for now, it seems everyone will have to wait it out and see what happens next.
“We don’t know yet. I think we just all stay safe and stay responsible and healthy and we’ll just see what happens,” Hartley said. “I mean, if they say we can go back to work in July, we’ll go back. And if not, then we’ll just wait until everything’s OK.”
What to expect when ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 returns with new episodes
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the This Is Us Season 5 premiere date, it seems there’s still plenty of things for fans to get excited for. Following the finale on March 24, creator Dan Fogelman teased what to expect when the Pearson family returns with the next all-new episode.
“I’m very excited about — especially with where the world is right now — the uplift and I would call it almost a rebirth that comes next season,” Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporter. He then shared plans for “new beginnings” and “something big” in the premiere.
Fogelman also touched on Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) storyline and confirmed the identity of the character’s fiancée will be sorted out immediately. The creator said:
I think that there’s basically many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story. We are far advanced already. I’ve already written the season premiere of next year and broken I think five episodes of the season, and we have mapped out plans for the entire next and sixth season honestly, so Kevin has a journey ahead of him, and I don’t want to get too far ahead of it just yet.
Meanwhile, we will dive into Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Miguel’s (Jon Huertas) journey as they move to St. Louis for the Alzheimer’s clinical trial.
“It’s going to be, obviously, a challenging chapter for Rebecca moving forward,” Fogelman said, per The Wrap. “We have a big storyline planned for Mandy next season in present day as an older woman and also her whole past timelines.”
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the This Is Us Season 5 premiere date. But clearly, the show’s team knows exactly where we are headed when the drama returns with new episodes. So no matter what happens, we know it’ll be worth the wait.
