Fans have been anxiously awaiting the third and final Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The second installment of the trilogy was released in 2017, and people everywhere were hoping for a 2019 sequel release.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that is going to happen due to staffing conflicts. But what exactly is holding up production? When will Guardians of the Galaxy 3 finally come out? Here’s what we know.

Why has the movie been put on hold?

The third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy was put on hold after the movie’s director, James Gunn, was fired. Tweets from a few years ago surfaced that showed Gunn apparently making light of the very serious topics of pedophilia and rape. Gunn apologized for the tweets, issuing a public statement to do so. Although several cast members asked for James Gunn to be rehired, Disney (a child-friendly company) stood beside their decision.

The public apology from James Gunn read: “Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be…To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies.”

When will ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ finally come out?

There is no word on an exact release date for Guardian of the Galaxy 3 as of yet, but fans shouldn’t expect anything in 2019. Whether 2020 will be the year or fans will have to wait even longer is not yet known. The good news is that Chris Pratt, who plays the primary role of Star Lord in the movie, says things are starting to get moving once more.

In an interview with Vanity, Chris Pratt said, “I promise there’ll be a third movie, I don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like, but I know everyone on board is just eager to give the fans what they want and wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way.”

Which actors will appear in the final sequel?

We know that Chris Pratt will resume the role of Star Lord in the final movie. The only ones confirmed according to IMDB, as of right now, are Elizabeth Debicki in the role of Ayesha, and Pom Klementieff in the role of Mantis.

We can assume that all other major characters will reappear, however. This would include Zoe Saldana in the role of Gamora, and Dave Bautista playing Drax. It would also include the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper as Groot and Rocket, respectively.

Although Yondu dying in the second installment of the movie would seem that Michael Rooker will not appear in the third, it is still possible he might make a small guest appearance. This, of course, would be in the form of flashbacks, but is unconfirmed.

What do we know about the plot?

The actual plotline of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 hasn’t yet been released. It has been confirmed, that the studio will continue to use the script written by fired director, James Gunn. Gunn’s brother, Sean, has stated on Twitter that the movie will take place after the third and fourth Avengers’ movies. Otherwise, fans everywhere are still awaiting more detailed information.

That information, however, is promised to be released with the arrival of the fourth Avengers’ movie, set to release later this year. Sean Gunn hinted that fans would get a sneak peek into a “seismic shift” in the Marvel universe with the release of this latest movie, and that will effect the timeline of Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
