When Will the ‘Black Widow’ Movie Take Place In the MCU Timeline?

We admit it; we have been totally captivated by the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe. So, the time is 100% right for Disney to capitalize on the films’ popularity.

As fans eagerly awaited the release of the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, there was already talk of which movies were to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Endgame thankfully gave us some closure after the devastating cliffhangers in Avengers: Infinity War. However, it also came with some heartbreak and it left us digging for clues as to what will happen next for our favorite characters who remain.

In the upcoming months, fans can expect the release of Spider-Man: Far from Home (July 2019), what will likely be the introduction to a brand-new era for the MCU. But, what about Black Widow’s standalone movie?

Captain Marvel has opened the doors, and the big screen, for female characters in title roles in new Marvel movies. Its popularity will definitely help to pave the way for Scarlett Johansson to finally bring her Black Widow into a title role. This is something fans and Johansson been waiting for.

Especially since Johansson has already appeared in eight films as the Black Widow, it seems only fitting that she finally get her own solo movie.

Previously, we’ve seen Black Widow in:

  • Iron Man 2
  • The Avengers
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

What we know so far

Other than Scarlett Johansson will hold the title role as Black Widow; we don’t actually know that much. Marvel has been tight-lipped about the plot and the casting.

We do know that the acclaimed Cate Shortland is directing the Black Widow movie and that very few supporting roles have been released for public information.

Shortland is best known for her work on features like Lore and Berlin Syndrome, but according to IMDB Black Widow will certainly be her biggest project to date by far.

Actress Florence Pugh has also joined the cast as another spy, alongside Rachel Weisz and David Harbour.

Recently, Marvel announced it has added a star from popular Hulu original, The Handmaid’s Tale to its cast. O-T Fagbenle, who plays Offred’s husband Luke in the TV drama, announced he was “so excited” to have earned the part.

What will ‘Black Widow’ be about?

Sources close to the film will betray very little information other than it will, perhaps, be a prequel based on what we know about the ending of Endgame.

Although, Johansson leads us to believe it may take place later in the Marvel timeline than we’d been suspecting. She has indicated she’d like to see the character experience some maturity and emotional growth, much as she has throughout the many years she has been portraying the Black Widow.

She’s stated”

“I would want…for the film to fit where I’m at and where I am in my life. I’ve played this character for a long time. It’s been probably, like, eight years or more, and so much has happened in my life…I think that there’s definitely an opportunity to explore Widow as a woman who has come into her own and is making independent and active choices for herself, probably for once in her life. She hasn’t always had that possibility.”

We’re excited to see where this path will take her too; the possibilities are endless.

As we wait to see, we can look forward to other Marvel sequels on the horizon including Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!
