Where Can You Watch ‘Avatar’? The Record-Breaking Movie Is Coming to A New Streaming Service This Month

There are a lot of incredible films available to watch on streaming services these days. Many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s best have been on Netflix and Hulu, but will soon come to the new Disney streaming service, Disney+. Other hits are available on Amazon’s Prime Video, and still others can be found on HBOGo and the like. Now, one of the most celebrated films from the ’00s, Avatar, is coming to a streaming service. Here’s when and where you can watch it.

‘Avatar’ came out in 2009

The acclaimed sci-fi epic Avatar was released in Dec. 2009. The film takes place in the distant future: 2154, to be exact. Human life on Earth is in despair, but there’s a planet, called Pandora, where a group of human hybrids travels to search for a valuable resource known as unobtanium.

Avatar stars Sam Worthington (Clash of the Titans), Sigourney Weaver (Alien), Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious), and Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy). IT was written, directed, and produced by James Cameron.

It was the highest-grossing film of all time until ‘Avengers: Endgame’

At the time, Avatar was — no exaggeration — the most talked-about moment in pop culture. It took years to complete, beginning with a script 15 years prior. It’s renowned for its incredible technology, including then brand new motion capture filming techniques, and state-of-the-art 3D technology.

Avatar was nominated for an impressive nine Academy Awards, winning for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. It also held the title of the highest-grossing film of all time when it crossed $2 billion at the box office, the first movie to do so. It wasn’t until this year when Avengers: Endgame surpassed it that it lost its title, nearly a decade later.

Here’s where you can watch it

Avatar is a movie that is, understandably, meant to be viewed on the big screen. However, these days, everything has to come into a home video format eventually. It’s taken some time, but as of this month, you’ll be able to stream Avatar from whatever device you choose.

Disney purchased the rights to Avatar years ago, developing a large attraction at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom theme park. Now, you can watch the original film on Disney+, beginning on Nov. 12, 2019, when the service launches. (This is just the in the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands. The film will be available in Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 19.)

When are the ‘Avatar’ sequels coming out?

Fans of Avatar have spent a very, very long time waiting for a sequel. Rumors began to circulate years ago, and then, in 2016, were confirmed. However, there’s isn’t just one sequel in development, nor two. There are a whopping four planned sequels on the way.

Filming began back in 2017. The main production for the second and third films has been completed, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. The dates for the sequels are as follows: Dec. 17, 2021, Dec. 22, 2023, Dec. 19, 2025, and Dec. 17, 2027. However, these are subject to change. For now, you can enjoy the original on Disney+.
