Which ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Stars Have Matching Tattoos? Why Mark Ruffalo Didn’t Get One

Avengers: Endgame is cleaning up at the box office, breaking $2 billion and counting, and it’s certainly been an incredible journey for the stars, who have become very close over the course of making the films. Some of the stars are so close, they have matching tattoos with a very special meaning.

The original six Avengers planned to get matching tattoos

In celebration of their roles in the MCU, the original six Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), each got matching ink.

They all have the Avengers logo intertwined with the number “6,” but you may have noticed one of the six didn’t get the tattoo — that would be Mark Ruffalo, who plays The Hulk.

In May 2018, Downey Jr. shared a video on Twitter of himself, Johansson, Hemsworth, and Renner, with the caption: “@ChrisEvans‪, now we are one… All our love…@Renner4Real @eastsideinktattoo @chrishemsworth @joshualord.”

On Instagram he shared a look at the tattooing in action and the final (very cool) result.

Who got the sixth Avengers tattoo?

Downey Jr. told Entertainment Weekly at the time: “Five of the original six Avengers got a tattoo. And the sixth was the tattoo artist, who gave it to five of us, the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo.”

Evans tweeted a video of himself tattooing the tattoo artist, tweeting: “Thanks for the ink, Joshua Lorde! (and for letting all of us maim you in return) Love to @RobertDowneyJr @Renner4Real @chrishemsworth Scarlett (we just need to get Ruffalo blackout drunk).”

Downey Jr. further explained how they all contributed to the tattoo artist’s ink, noting: “Each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun and it was a total massacre. Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us.”

Why didn’t Mark Ruffalo get a matching Avengers tattoo?

There’s no denying that the original Avengers share a special bond, with Downey Jr. explaining that it was Johansson’s idea to celebrate their connection with tattoos. Evans and Johansson got theirs done in New York and, he explained, “their New York guy, Josh Lord, who is amazing, flew out to LA, he did me, did Renner, and then we just bullied Hemsworth into doing it, and he got it.”

Ruffalo, it turns out, couldn’t be persuaded. The reason? He has a fear of needles… and he’s also “punk rock.” He explained during an appearance on The Tonight Show: “I didn’t get a tattoo. I opted out of the tattoo.”

He continued: “First of all, I’m afraid of needles. So there’s that. But also I kind of have a punk rock soul. And I felt like ‘Dude, everyone has tattoos. I’m gonna be punk rock and not get the tattoo.’”

“Honestly,” he added, “I feel left out, and I’m working up the courage to get needled.”

During press for Avengers: Endgame, some of the cast talked with Jimmy Kimmel and the tattoos came up. Downey Jr. explained that Ruffalo “declined, at his own peril,” with Johansson noting, “I guess he said yesterday that he’s afraid of needles, but he didn’t say that before, just made it, it seemed like he was really judgemental.”

Kimmel had a laugh, noting, “The Hulk is afraid of needles.”
