Bands often breakup and the Jonas Brothers was no different. The breakup affected Kevin, Joe, and Nick’s relationship with each other. Which brother broke up the band and why? Here is everything you need to know.
It was previously reported that the band broke up because of a deep rift
In 2013, the Jonas Brothers were canceling tour dates and were reportedly having problems. A rep told E! News, “There is a deep rift within the band,” The source then said, “There was a big disagreement over their music direction.”
They eventually announced their split that year. “It’s over for now,” Kevin Jonas told People. Nick Jonas also talked about the split being temporary. “It’s really hard to say ‘forever,’” he said. “We’re closing a chapter, for sure.”
The blame wasn’t put on one person in that interview. Joe Jonas said, “It was a unanimous decision,” but that’s not exactly the case. There was one brother who initiated the band to breakup for a reason.
Nick Jonas broke up the Jonas Brothers
Joe Jonas previously revealed in a Reddit AMA that it was Nick Jonas who wanted a solo career. He didn’t take that news well.
“I was seeing a therapist and I wasn’t on speaking terms with my brothers,” he explained to a fan. “When it happened, we were focusing on going on another tour and we had plans to hit the road and do what we had been doing for a while.”
Joe Jonas then revealed what happened when his little brother broke the news. “Nick brought it to the table that he wanted to focus on different things, like acting and doing music on his own. At first, it was really shocking to me because it was kind of all I had known was the Jonas Brothers, forever. So, I was pretty mad and confused because, I was like, I’ve been putting so much time and effort into this for so long and now I just have to stop and figure out what’s next.”
He also admits his part in the breakup. “I broke the band up, but I got them back together,” Nick Jonas said on Carpool Karaoke. Kevin Jonas then said, “It’s true, it was a full redemptive story.”
The brothers have since gone to therapy to reunite
The brothers were brought back together from working on a documentary together about their lives. They still revealed they had to do some work in therapy together.
“We literally spent a year basically doing therapy, working through some things, and figuring out what this chapter would look like,” Nick Jonas revealed on The Late Show with James Corden. “We spent a lot of time filming again, and then I think we realized that there was a magic there we missed. I sort of began the conversation about doing this again and after a few more conversations they came around.”
In the end, Nick Jonas was the one who wanted to branch out from the band. He successfully released two solo albums, Nick Jonas and Last Year Was Complicated. He also acted in the show, Kingdom and the movie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
