Which Character Did Ed Sheeran Play in ‘Game of Thrones’?
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you probably remember Ed Sheeran’s cameo. It was the cameo that caused him to shut down his Twitter account because haters were angry. How dare a long time fan of Game of Thrones, as Sheeran is, take a small role on his favorite show? Then again, it was a shock and felt a little forced. But, still.
The infamous spot was back in 2017, for the first episode of season seven. His character was sitting in the woods with friends singing while Arya Stark crossed their path on her way to kill the queen.
While the Twitter-verse scratched their heads and pounded their fists, the rest of us just wanted to know why he was on the show and if he would be returning. It turns out that Maisie Williams, the actress who plays Arya Stark, is a big fan of Ed Sheeran’s music. A producer on the show actually set up the cameo, as a surprise to her. So, who was his character and will he be returning in the final season?
Which character did Ed Sheeran play in ‘Game of Thrones’?
His tiny almost insignificant part caused a lot of controversies a couple of years ago. Die-hard fans wanted to know why someone with little to no acting history was cast in an actual role. It was one thing to have musicians come on the show for non-speaking cameos, but Sheeran’s role was a little different, and some people were not happy about it.
He played a Lannister soldier named Eddie. When Arya hears his voice singing in the woods, she rides up to find the singer sitting around the fire with other soldiers. They offer her something to eat and drink, and a little company. It was a pretty small part, but it still left a lot of questions. Whatever happened to poor Eddie? Why did Sheeran get a cameo with lines?
Other musicians have popped up in ‘Game of Thrones’
Well, it turns out that Sheeran was not the only musician to stumble on the Game of Thrones set. Throughout the show, many singers, bands, and other stars have found themselves on the show.
Members of the group, Of Monsters and Men, Sigur Rós, Mastodon, and Coldplay have all popped up in cameos on Game of Thrones, but their appearances are less than memorable according to Popsugar. Either because their scenes were smaller or they did not speak in them.
Sheeran’s scene was longer, and while he only had a few lines in the episode, fans still wondered if this was a hint at more to come. Since he popped up on the show, there has been some speculation that he might pop back up in future episodes. So, where is the redheaded Lannister soldier and will he be coming back?
Will we see Ed Sheeran return to ‘GoT’?
When the Game of Thrones producers wanted to surprise Williams, they decided to create a scene for her with Sheeran. They were both pretty big fans of each other, but it left fans with more questions than answers.
Many fans speculated that because he had a more prominent cameo than other musicians, he might be returning in future Game of Thrones episodes. Now that the show is winding down in its last season, they have apparently tied up that loose end.
On the season eight premiere, in the scene where Bronn is with three women, he explains what happened to Sheeran’s character. A battle between Lannisters and Targaryens was brought up. One woman said that Ed was attacked by Targaryen’s dragons, saying: “That boy Eddie came back with his face burned right off. He’s got no eyelids now.”
This left little doubt in the minds of Game of Thrones fans that Sheeran would not be returning to the show. On the other hand, the woman did not say that he had died. If he were to return in the last season, fans might be more open to it, now that he is apparently burnt to a crisp and missing his eyelids.
