Which Golden Globes 2021 Nominees Have Also Won Oscars?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association released the list of nominees for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards on Feb. 3. The HFPA honors film and television at the Globes. Therefore, many of this year’s nominees are Oscar-winning talent. The 78th Golden Globe Awards will air Feb. 28 on NBC.

The Golden Globe nominees for TV won Oscars for movies 

The television landscape has attracted many movie stars. So it’s no surprise that previous Academy Award winners are now sweeping nominations for television. Al Pacino starred in the Nazi-hunting Amazon drama, Hunters, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. Previously, Pacino won the Oscar for Scent of a Woman.

In the limited series Mrs. America, Cate Blanchett plays anti-Equal Rights Amendment activist Phyllis Schlafly. Blanchett is also a double Oscar winner for The Aviator and Blue Jasmine. Nicole Kidman has a Golden Globe nomination for this year’s The Undoing. She previously won the Academy Award for The Hours. Olivia Colman played Queen Elizabeth II on The Crown and won an Oscar for The Favourite.

These Golden Globe nominated directors won Oscars in different categories 

Not everyone keeps all their nominations in the same category. Many are multi-talents, and their various nominations show it. For example, the Best Director category for this year’s Golden Globes includes Oscar-winners for other crafts

Regina King earned a Golden Globe nomination for directing One Night In Miami. When she won an Oscar, it was for acting in If Beale Street Could Talk. Aaron Sorkin has Golden Globe nominations for directing as well as writing The Trial of the Chicago 7. He won the screenwriting Academy Award for The Social Network but has never been nominated for directing.

These movie nominees also won Oscars

The most overlaps of Academy Award and Golden Globe nominees are in the film categories. For example, Anthony Hopkins is nominated for The Father. He won the Oscar for his trademark role of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Likewise, Gary Oldman earned a nomination playing screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz in Mank. He won the Oscar for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Viola Davis is nominated for a Golden Globe as the title character in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. She previously won an Oscar for another August Wilson stage adaptation, Fences. Frances McDormand is nominated for Nomadland. She previously won two Oscars for Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Jared Leto has a Golden Globe nomination for The Little Things. He previously won both the Globe and Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club. Jodie Foster is nominated for The Mauritanian this year. She has won two Oscars for The Accused and Silence of the Lambs. Olivia Colman is nominated for another Golden Globe for The Father. She also has the Academy Award as mentioned above.
