Which JoJo Siwa Products Have Been Recalled? What Parents Need to Know About the Asbestos-Tainted Makeup

Parents, you might want to check your kid’s makeup drawer. A cosmetics set from tween-friendly singing sensation JoJo Siwa has been recalled by the FDA after it tested positive for asbestos. The FDA is advising people to stop using the product, which was sold at Claire’s stores nationwide.

Why you should toss Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set

The product in question is Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set. It has the SKU# 888711136337 and Batch/Lot No. S180109. It was sold in a clear, heart-shaped plastic bag with handles and contained an eyeshadow palette, two lip glosses, and nail polish. The product, which was available from July 2018 to May 2019, is no longer for sale in Claire’s stores, according to the retailer.

The government agency issued the recall after testing revealed the eyeshadow in the kit was contaminated with asbestos fibers. Siwa hasn’t commented on the recall.

To see if you have an affected product, check the batch number on the back panel below the ingredient list or find the SKU on the price ticket. While no injuries or adverse reactions have been reported as a result of using the makeup, the chain said it is recalling the product “out of an abundance of caution.” If you have the product in your home, you can return it to Claire’s for a full refund.

“Claire’s continues to have confidence in the safety and composition of its products,” the company said in a statement.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a known carcinogen and is linked to diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. Its use is banned in many products in the U.S., though it is still allowed in a handful of instances.

Talcum powder, which is used in some cosmetics, can be naturally contaminated with asbestos, according to the American Cancer Society. The personal care and cosmetic industry voluntarily committed to making sure their products were asbestos-free back in the 1970s. Nonetheless, Johnson & Johnson has come under fire for the amount of asbestos in its baby powder, with some claiming it is linked to ovarian cancer in women who used it in their genital area. In 2018, the company was ordered to pay $4.69 billion to 22 women who say its products caused their cancer.

Other Claire’s products have also been recalled

The JoJo Siwa-branded makeup isn’t the only asbestos-tainted product from Claire’s that the FDA has recalled. Consumers are also being advised to pitch these items that were sold at the store:

  • Claire’s Eye Shadows – Batch No/Lot No: 08/17
  • Claire’s Compact Powder – Batch No/Lot No: 07/15
  • Claire’s Contour Palette – Batch No/Lot No: 04/17

Another product, Beauty Plus Global Contour Effects Palette 2, Batch No. S1603002/PD-C1179, was also recalled, though it’s not clear if that item was sold at Claire’s.

You can see pictures of all the recalled products on the FDA website. As with the JoJo makeup kit, these products are no longer sold in stores. You can follow the FDA on Twitter to find out about any future product recalls.
