Which Royal Will Be the First to Know When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Baby Is Born?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are just mere weeks away from the arrival of their first baby, and the entire royal family is gearing up to meet its newest member. When the day does arrive, Meghan and Harry will be extremely eager to share the news with their family members — but who will find out first?

Harry and Meghan are expecting a baby in late April

Harry and Meghan haven’t even been married for a year yet, but they will welcome their first child this month. The couple announced back in October that they will be expecting in the spring, but besides that, very few details about Baby Sussex have been released. Meghan did let it slip that the baby is due in late April, but the couple hasn’t said the baby’s gender and claims to not know it themselves. People have been speculative of what the two will name the baby, but no true details have been released. The public will only know more when the baby is actually born.

There are several birth traditions royal women typically follow

The royal family loves to stick with tradition. However, Meghan has been known to break barriers and do her own thing when it comes to royal protocol. In terms of giving birth, most royal women choose to deliver their babies in the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital. For a while, people weren’t sure if Meghan would follow in the tradition, but it appears that she will. Royal mothers also tend to introduce their children outside the Lindo Wing. The babies are always swaddled in a very specific baby blanket, which has been a tradition for nearly 70 years. And the royals don’t love change.

One important rule of giving birth: Queen Elizabeth finds out first

When it comes to the one person whom Harry and Meghan will tell first, Queen Elizabeth will always win out. She is the queen, so she is required to be the first to know of any royal family news — it’s longstanding protocol based on respect for the hierarchy. The queen was the first to know when Meghan and Harry were pregnant; she will be the first to know when Meghan goes into labor and the first to know when Baby Sussex finally arrives. From there, the two are free to tell family members in any order they want, although news travels fast in that family.

Harry and Meghan will likely introduce their baby to the world the same way Prince William and Kate Middleton did

When Baby Sussex is born, Meghan and Harry will likely follow in other royal footsteps and introduce Baby Sussex to the world outside the Lindo Wing. The baby will be swaddled in his or her royal baby blanket, and the couple will probably stand on the steps in the same way royals have in the past. Although Meghan and Harry have broken tradition before, it would mean a lot to the royal family if they stuck with typical family tradition when it comes to welcoming a new prince or princess.
