Who Are Rey’s Parents in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’?
The force is strong with this character, and for some, it doesn’t make sense. Apparently, Rey’s parents were “nobody.” Still, how can Rey be so powerful without any family members strong with the force? Who are the parents of this character? Will they appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? Here are a few fan theories about Rey’s family.
During ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ Rey revealed that her parents were ‘nobody’
Since the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered, fans have been asking who Rey’s parents are. When she has a force vision in this movie, viewers saw a young Rey yelling “come back” to a ship that presumably holds her parents. In the following movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey reveals what she already knows about her parents — they were nobody.
“They were filthy junk traders; sold you off for drinking money. They’re dead, in a pauper’s grave in the Jakku desert. You have no place in this story. You come from nothing,” Kylo Ren elaborated.
However, some believe this might not actually be the truth about Rey’s family. Presumably, what Rey thinks happened and, in turn, what Kylo Ren learned while touching her hand, might not be the end of the story. During an interview with ABC News, J.J. Abrams shared some exciting news about this character’s origin story.

Thanks to the teaser trailer and the D23 special look at the upcoming movie, fans have a few more hints regarding Rey’s parents. A few fans theories are circulating the internet that explain this character’s power.
Who do fans think Rey’s parents are?
The D23 special look showcased a different side of Rey that led fans to a few different theories about Rey. Could she be related to Emperor Palpatine? Is Rey related to Obi-Wan Kenobi? If she’s related to Kylo Ren, that could be how the two connect with the force. Fans took to social media, sharing their thoughts on Rey’s parents.
“‘We don’t want a redemption arc for Kylo Ren it would just be like with Darth Vader! Do something new,'” said one Twitter user. “Also, ‘but Rey has to be a Skywalker and be related to Kylo just like with Leia and Luke either way it doesn’t make sense!’”
“I still believe Palpatine is related to Rey in some way, I still think that is 100% on the cards. Hope Anakin does show up, and I hope whatever happens to Ben, it’s not a cheap sell-out,” wrote another Twitter user. Fans will just have to watch until The Rise of Skywalker to learn more.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in the United States on Dec. 20, 2019.
