Who Did Billie Eilish Thank During Her AMA Acceptance Speech?

Billie Eilish is considered one of the coolest people on the planet because she doesn’t seem to care what other people think. Even when her art is offbeat or she breaks social taboos, Eilish has an air of unshakable confidence which draws people to her. This stands in stark contrast to the humility she displayed on Nov. 24, 2019, at the American Music Awards (AMAs).

Billie Eilish wins award over several major artists

Anyone who’s prominent enough to perform at the AMAs has plenty of reason to take pride in their accomplishments. Among the elite few to perform at the AMAs last night were Taylor Swift, Kesha, Christina Aguilera, Lizzo, Halsey, and Billie Eilish. Eilish performed her single “All the Good Girls Go to Hell” and brought the house down.

Near the end of the evening, the singer won the award for Favorite New Artist. She won the award over her peers Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Luke Combs, and Ella Mai. All of those singers had a watershed year, making Eilish’s win an amazing accomplishment.

Billie Eilish – alternative rock queen?

In addition to the award for Favorite New Artist, Eilish won the award for Favorite Artist – Alternative Rock. The former came as a bit of a surprise given Eilish’s music is generally not considered alternative rock or rock at all. However, it could be argued that Eilish’s pop songs borrow some of the swagger and oddball sensibilities of 1990s rock icons like Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and Billie Joe Armstrong. To win the award, she beat out indie rock stalwarts Panic! at the Disco and Imagine Dragons. Regardless of her genre, what matters is her fans showed how much they love her music by voting for her to get these awards.

Billie Eilish’s stunning humility

Eilish was pleased just to be nominated. According to Entertainment Tonight, she said “The nomination is, like, the part that’s important. “To be even nominated at all, to be in the realm of the Grammys in any sort of way, is indescribable…” She was in awe of the celebrities surrounding her, saying “Even to be here, at the rehearsals the last couple days, I’ve been looking at the row I’m seated in, and it’s like, every single person that I grew up watching on TV is in that row.”

Eilish was thankful when she won the award for Favorite New Artist. As fans applauded her, Eilish said “I want to thank the AMAs for even thinking of me in the slightest. Thank you to my creative team, thank you for letting me do whatever I want, pretty much all the time. Thanks to the fans, because that’s the only reason I’m even alive.”

Eilish also thanked her brother, Finneas O’Connell, a singer and songwriter who releases music under the mononym “Finneas.” Finneas co-wrote many of his sister’s most iconic songs, including “Bad Guy,” Bury a Friend,” and “You Should See Me in a Crown.” In the speech, she told the crowd her brother is her best friend.

Eilish might at be at the top of her game, but she proved even the brightest of stars can be humble. She made a major statement by thanking her fans. They couldn’t have been happier with her acknowledgement.
