Who Did Pippa Middleton Name Her Baby After?

Pippa Middleton gave birth to a baby boy in October 2018 and now she and her husband, James Matthews, have decided on a name for the little one. While their son was clearly named to honor some family members, his first name has left a few people scratching their heads.

Middleton welcomed her first child at the same Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital where her sister and Prince William’s children were born. Following the birth, Kensington Palace released a statement saying that “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are thrilled for Pippa and James.”

We know that Middleton and Matthews’ baby will likely have many play dates with his older cousins but he will be bonded with the youngest of the Cambridge children in a unique way. Here’s more on that plus the name Kate’s sister chose for her son and why some people found it a bit odd.

The baby’s name and who he is named after

The Mail on Sunday noted that the baby’s birth certificate states his full name as Arthur Michael William.

The couple reportedly named him Micheal after Middleton’s dad as well as Matthews’ brother who died mountain climbing. The latter was killed in an accident while attempting to scale Mount Everest in 1999 when he was 22. Middleton previously honored Matthews’ sibling another way as well when she climbed the Matterhorn
in 2016 to raise funds for the Michael Matthews Foundation.

“It was humbling to have been able to climb one of the world’s most beautiful mountains and raise money for a charity created in memory of an extraordinary young man who lost his life on another peak,” she said. “Although I have raised money in the past for the Michael Matthews Foundation, it has now become even more important to me and my family.”

She added that although she never had a chance to meet him she shared “his spirit and passion for the mountains. We made this climb knowing he would have been there nudging us on, and we are honored to be supporting his memory.”

It is believed that Middleton and her husband gave their child the name William as well as a nod to Prince William.

Middleton threw away the rule book about not giving your children the same name as your siblings’ children when she named her son. Baby Arthur shares a name with the royal baby her sister and brother-in-law welcomed six months earlier.

The Duke and Duchess’ of Cambridge named their third child, born in April, Prince Louis Arthur after William, whose full name is William Arthur Philip Louis. Arthur is Prince Charles’ middle name as well.

Even though some thought it was a bit odd that Middleton too chose Arthur as the baby’s first name we’re guessing she cleared it with her big sister first.
