Who Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Baby Boy Bump Down In the Line of Succession?

Royal baby mania has begun as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have welcomed their first child together.

Now, many fans are questioning where their baby boy falls in the line of succession to the British throne and where his place is in relation to his father as well as his older cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Here’s the answer to that and how baby Sussex altered the line for some other royals.

The new baby’s place in the line of succession

The royal baby does not change the line for all royals. Those before him have stayed the same and they include Prince Charles, who is heir apparent and will take over the throne after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Following Charles is his oldest son and Harry’s brother, Prince William.

The Duke of Cambridge’s first child, Prince George, is third. His little sister, Charlotte, is fourth in line thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act which amended the system so that males no longer take precedence over their older sisters. That rule change makes her younger brother, Prince Louis, fifth.

After the birth of each of William’s children, Harry’s place in the line was bumped down. The Duke of Sussex now sits at sixth in line and his son becomes seventh. If Markle and the prince have any more children they will fall in line behind their older sibling.

The baby does change the place of some royals in the line succession as he bumped his great uncle Prince Andrew down the line. Following baby Sussex’s birth, the Duke of York fell to eighth.

With Andrew now in the eighth position, everyone else behind him is bumped down as well. The duke’s daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, are ninth an 10th respectively.

Then comes Prince Charles’ youngest brother, Prince Edward, who becomes 11th. Followed by the Earl of Wessex’s son, James Viscount Severn, at 12th and then Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise, at 13th.

Charles’ sister, Princess Anne, is now 14th and her son, Peter, is 15th. Peter’s daughters, Savannah and Isla, are 16th and 17th. And Anne’s daughter, Zara, moves to 18th while her two children, Mia and Lena, move down the line to 19th and 20th.

Prince Andrew congratulates Harry and Markle after baby’s birth

Of course, there were no hard feelings on Andrew’s part about being bumped and he was one of the first family members to congratulate Markle and his nephew on the arrival of their little one.

“Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the safe delivery of your baby boy!⁣” Andrew wrote on social media.

Many other royals also sent congratulatory messages and the palace released the following statement after baby Sussex came into the world:

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news. The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage. Her Royal Highness and the baby are both doing well.
