Since former president, George W. Bush, ran for office in 2000, we have learned a lot about who Dick Cheney is. With the release of the new movie, Vice, we are starting to learn even more about the 46th vice president of the United States and his wife. We know that being an influential character in the White House can have its challenges, but what about the wives of these first-class political players? How do they handle their role in the White House? Given her career background, it may have been easier for Lynne Cheney to adjust to her new role as Second Lady than it was for some of the other Vice President’s wives.

So, who is Lynne Cheney and how long has she been married to one of the most powerful vice presidents in American history? Here is everything we know about her.

She is a very educated woman

It is obvious that education is very important to Lynne Cheney. She first went to Colorado College where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Literary English. She then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where she received her Master of Arts degree. In order to continue her education even further, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she then received her Ph.D. in 19th Century British Literature.

She has had a busy career before and after her life in the White House

For decades, Lynne Cheney has had many honorable and noble jobs that have helped to serve the people of the United States in various ways. From 1986 to 1991, she was a chairman for the National Endowment for Humanities, a government agency that helps to provide research, education, and helps to save public programs. Before her reign as the second lady, Lynne had already had experience at being in front of the camera. Lynne grew up in Casper, Wyoming where she attended Natrona County High School. It was at that school where she met her soon-to-be husband, Richard “Dick” Cheney. They got married in 1964 and are still happily together after 54 years.

She has two daughters

Lynne and Dick Cheney have two children: Liz Cheney-Perry and Mary Cheney. Both of the Cheney girls have followed in their parents’ footsteps and have taken an active role in the political arena. In addition to working in the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign, Liz was also the Deputy of Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs in 2002. In 2009, she co-founded an organization that helps educate Americans about national security issues Called Keep America Safe. In 2012, she was hired by Fox News where she worked as a contributor for 18 months. Most recently, Liz has just won a second term in the Wyoming House of Representatives.

Mary Cheney is the youngest daughter of Lynne and Dick. She is an openly gay woman who married her long-time partner, Heather Poe, in 2012. Although she had also helped with the 2014 Bush-Cheney election campaign, she has not had an active role in politics as her sister has. In 1993, she worked in promotions for the Colorado Rockies baseball team. After that, she had also worked as a public relations manager for the Coors Brewing CompanyAfter her dad’s vice presidency was over, Mary wrote a book entitled Now It’s My Turn: A Daughter’s Chronicle of Political Life.
