Who Is Emma Coronel Aispuro, El Chapo’s Beauty Queen Wife?

El Chapo is widely regarded as one of the richest drug dealers of all time. The incarcerated drug lord continues to make headlines even from behind bars. Most recently, the billionaire kingpin made headlines when he asked the judge to allow him to hug his wife at the start of his trial.

El Chapo’s wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, is also capable of making headlines all by herself. Coronel Aispuro made headlines on Monday when she was absent from El Chapo’s trial proceedings in New York. This was the first time Aispuro has missed any of the proceedings, which started over a month ago. With her stunning beauty and seemingly relentless devotion to her husband, it’s no surprise her absence was noticed.

Emma Coronel Aispuro was born on July 2, 1989 near San Francisco, CA to Bianca Estela Aispuro and Ines Aispuro Barreras. Most of Coronel Aispuro’s childhood was spent in Northwestern Mexico, however, as she grew up in a small village in Canelas, Durango called La Angostura with her brother, Ines Omar Coronel Aispuro.

It was Coronel Aispuro’s father who introduced her to Joaquin Guzman, better known as El Chapo, during a party in 2006. Coronel Aispuro had a boyfriend at the time, but granted El Chapo a dance. Coronel Aispuro told the Los Angeles Times, “He was dancing with another girl. I was dancing with my boyfriend — at that time I had a boyfriend — and we crossed paths right in the center of the dance floor. He flirtatiously smiled at me. After a while a person told me, ‘The man asks if you want to dance with him.’ And I said, ‘OK.’ Because in the ranchos, even though you have a boyfriend, you can dance with every person who asks you to dance. So I said, ‘Of course!'”

Coronel Aispuro entered the beauty pageant at the 2007 Coffee and Guava Festival when she was 17 years old. As a requirement, Coronel Aispuro and the four other contestants each had to host a party in honor of their candidacy. On the day of Coronel Aispuro’s party, which was held on Three Kings Day, El Chapo marched into town with hundreds of armed guards to announce his intention to marry her.

When Coronel Aispuro won the pageant, El Chapo hired three bands to celebrate the beauty queen’s coronation. It is reported that El Chapo bribed the judges so that Coronel Aispuro would win. It was important for her to win the pageant, because is a decades old tradition for mob bosses and drug kingpins to marry beauty queens. Coronel Aispuro married El Chapo on her 18th birthday. In doing so, she had to surrender her crown to the first runner-up. El Chapo was 40 years old on the couple’s wedding day.

Despite the fact that local drug lords attended the wedding, Coronel Aispuro claims that she had no idea her husband was a drug dealer when she married him. Her brother and father were later arrested for their association with El Chapo; they were reportedly deputies of the Mexican drug lord. As of 2016, she still believed in her husband’s innocence.

Emma Coronel Aispuro and El Chapo have two daughters

Coronel Aispuro and El Chapo are parents to seven-year-old twin daughters, Emaly and Maria Joaquina. El Chapo arranged for Coronel Aispuro to give birth to the twins in California. Emaly and Maria Joaquina were born in Lancaster, which is just outside Los Angeles. The spot where the father signs is blank on both of the twins’ birth certificates.

Emaly and Maria Joaquina were two years old when their father was arrested. El Chapo, who moved more drugs than Pablo Escobar during his peak, was making breakfast for Coronel Aispuro and his daughters when authorities entered their apartment.

According to El Chapo’s defense lawyers, Coronel Aispuro has not deserted her husband in his time of need. Although she has been absent from the court proceedings since Monday, the lawyers stated that she had simply been taking care of business and spending time with her daughters in Mexico. She reportedly considered bringing the twins to the trial when she returned, which she ended up doing right before the trial paused during the 2018 Christmas holiday. Emaly and Maria Joaquina are the only family members allowed to visit El Chapo, as contact with Coronel Aispuro has been barred since his incarceration.
