Who Is Grammys Host Alicia Keys?
This year, the 61st Grammy Awards are hosted by Alicia Keys. If you’re not familiar with her name, the accomplished R&B artist has a lot of clout behind her name. Here’s how you may know her, and why she is a great choice to host the ceremony.
She’s a Grammy-winning artist herself
Keys’ impact on the music industry can’t be overstated. She began her career as a teenager, and her breakout album, Songs in A Minor, sent her to the top of the charts when she was just 20 years old. She has earned a total of 15 Grammys for six acclaimed albums. In addition to her captivating voice, Keys also plays the piano on most of her tracks.
She is a coach on The Voice
Keys has been a Coach on the reality music competition show The Voice for a few of the more recent seasons. She first began in 2016 with Seasons 11, returned for Season 12, took a break for Season 13, and then returned once again for Season 14. Keys was the winning coach for Season 12 when her team member, Chris Blue, won the competition.
Keys has been married to artist Swiss Beatz (legal name Kasseem Dean) since 2010. However, they go way back — the two musicians have known each other since they were teenagers getting their start in the industry.
Prior to her relationship with Dean, Keys dated producer Kerry “Krucial” Brothers. He collaborated with Keys on numerous works, including her Grammy-winning first album Songs in A Minor.
She’s also an actress
Though she is best known for her musical talents, Keys has also dabbled in Hollywood. At just four years old, she appeared in an episode of The Cosby Show. Keys has had supporting roles in films such as Smokin’ Aces, The Nanny Diaries, and The Secret Life of Bees. She also acted in two episodes of the HBO series Empire.
Keys is a mom
Keys and Dean have two children together, sons Egypt Daoud Dean and Genesis Ali Dean. She is also stepmother to Dean’s children from his previous relationships: Prince Nasir Dean, Kasseem Dean Jr., and Nicole Dean.
Alicia Keys’ net worth
In addition to her music, Keys earns money for The Voice, product endorsements, and much more. In 2018, her book, Blend: The Secret to Co-Parenting and Creating a Balanced Family, was released, adding another revenue stream. Keys is estimated to have a net worth of $100 million.
She cares about equality in the industry
Keys has taken it upon herself to speak about the inequality in not just the music industry, but across the board. She spoke at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon in 2018, where she was honored for her nonprofit Keep a Child Alive.
Referencing her hit song, she said of women, “We are more on fire than we’ve ever been — and look at all the action that’s around us: women running for office in record numbers, women banding together in the entertainment industry, women demanding an end to disparity in the music industry like equal representation on the Grammy stage.” By hosting the awards, she has certainly taken her own call-to-action to heart.
