Who Is ‘Outlander’ Star Caitriona Balfe’s Fiance Tony McGill?

Caitriona Balfe rose to stardom playing Outlander’s Claire Fraser but her real-life romance with Tony McGill has left fans wanting more. Balfe, of course, has been very secretive about her relationship with McGill and has only talked about their romance on a handful of occasions. To make things worse, McGill is pretty much nonexistent online and does not have social media accounts. With a wedding on the horizon, here is everything we know about Balfe’s fiancé.

Balfe and McGill go way back

It is unclear when Balfe and McGill started dating, but the earliest evidence of their romance dates back to 2015. A video from 2015 was uploaded on Instagram that shows Caitriona Balfe playing the flute at a pub while sitting on McGill’s lap. It is evident in the clip that McGill and Balfe are a hot item, though they have never revealed when their relationship got off the ground.

The only other thing we know about McGill is that he is Irish, he enjoys staying out of the limelight and works as a music producer in Ireland. Other than that, McGill has kept most of his life a complete mystery.

According to Marie Claire, McGill and Balfe have appeared in public on two separate occasions prior to 2019. The first time they were spotted together was in 2016. The couple made an appearance in honor of Jodie Foster’s induction on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A year later, they walked the red carpet at the Oscar Wilde Awards and looked absolutely adorable together.

Unfortunately, these are the only times Balfe and McGill have stepped out in public, though fans are hopeful that will change once they get married.

Caitriona Balfe announces her big engagement

In 2018, Balfe confirmed that she and McGill have taken their relationship to the next level. The Outlander star appeared on the red carpet for the 2018 Golden Globes and rocked a massive engagement ring. Balfe later confirmed in an interview that she and McGill are engaged.

She did not, however, say when the wedding will take place. It has been well over a year since the engagement announcement, yet Balfe has not said anything about the wedding.

The engagement shattered any hopes of Balfe and her Outlander co-star, Sam Heughan, getting together in real life. The two have amazing chemistry on the show and fans have long speculated about their relationship outside of work. The rumors have gotten so bad that Balfe and Heughan have addressed them on several occasions, explaining that, while they get along great on set, they are only friends.

That said, Caitriona Balfe has yet to tie the knot with McGill, so there is always a possibility that she and Heughan could get together. But based on everything they have said in previous interviews, the chances of that happening are slim.

Balfe and McGill appear at BAFTA party

This past January, McGill joined Balfe for the annual BAFTAs. The two were spotted at the Four Seasons Hotel, where they posed for several photographs at a party. The Outlander star rocked a floral dress for the festivities while McGill wore a black blazer over a grey shirt. The appearance came almost exactly a year after Balfe announced her engagement.

Caitriona would later walk the red carpet for the Golden Globes, where she was up for the Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series. Balfe was against some stiff competition for the award, including Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Elizabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Kerri Russell (The Americans), and Julia Roberts (Homecoming). Although Outlander fans were pulling hard for Caitriona Balfe, she lost out to Oh.

Balfe is currently gearing up for the new season of Outlander, which is currently filming in Scotland. The actress has not commented on the rumors surrounding her romantic life, so we can only hope that she lets us know when the wedding takes place.

Until then, fans can rest assured that they will see Caitriona Balfe back in action as Claire Fraser when Outlander returns to Starz in 2020.
