Who Is Princess Eugenie and Why Don’t We Hear More From Her?
When it comes to British royals ending up in the headlines, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge take the cake. They are in the news and all across social media so much, it’s easy to forget that there are other royals among them. Princess Eugenie is one such royal — one who doesn’t get very much screen time.
But why is Princess Eugenie’s name not plastered across headlines like Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle? After all, rocking the title of princess means she should be noteworthy, right?
Who is Princess Eugenie?
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have had several children throughout their lifelong marriage. There’s Prince Charles – the Prince of Wales, Princess Anne – the Princess Royal, Prince Edward – the Earl of Wessex, and lastly Prince Andrew – the Duke of York.
Prince Andrew, the third of Her Majesty’s children, has gone on to build a family of his own. He married Sarah Ferguson — a relationship that can definitely be classified as a whirlwind romance. The pair got engaged in 1986 and all was well until a bombshell dropped in 2002. Fergie was photographed in a relationship with oil tycoon John Bryan. The racey photo was the center of a huge scandal, one that inevitably led to divorce.
Before calling it quits (and weirdly remaining oddly close) the pair gave birth to two children: Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. At the time of the divorce, the daughter duo was 7 and 6 years old respectively. Now they are 29 and 30. But despite getting older, they haven’t made much of an impact on the royal family, or the news surrounding them.
Why don’t we hear more about Princess Eugenie?
Princess Eugenie is what’s considered a non-working royal. Neither she nor her sister have much to do with royal engagements. They don’t do work on behalf of the queen and don’t help keep the royal cogs turning. Being so removed from the inner workings, it’s no surprise that Princess Eugenie rarely pops up in headlines. Despite being princesses’ and being in line for the throne — granted it’s far down the line — the pair consider themselves pretty “average.” While speaking with Vogue, Princess Eugenie said:
“We want to show people who we are as working, young, royal women, but also not to be afraid of putting ourselves out there.”
Princess Eugenie is really doing her best to appear as down to earth as possible but given her history of lavish vacations, she isn’t doing a very good job. Eugenie and her sister really like to push the notion that they’ve had a very regular upbringing, a trait that really rubs critics and fans of the royal family the wrong way.
Lavish vacations aside, Princess Eugenie does happen to work a rather impressive “run-of-the-mill” job. She’s the Associate Director at a London art gallery known as Hauser & Wirth. It comes with quite a bit of responsibility which makes one wonder how she manages to put in so many vacation days! Special treatment, maybe?
Why is Princess Eugenie a non-working royal?
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are far from the only royals who lack an important position among the British royal family. But who decides whether or not a member of the family is important enough to take the heat? Her Majesty and her eldest son it seems! According to RoyalCenter, the queen straight up denied them the opportunity — a move that infuriated Prince Andrew.
“Andrew has always wanted his daughters to be full-time royals. He sees it as a slight on him and them if they are not. But Charles calls the shots and he wants the Royal Family giving value for money.” – A source (The Sun)
