Who Is the Voice of the Grinch in the 2018 Movie Remake?
A long-time favorite story for all ages, Dr. Suess’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a perennial holiday classic. From the 1960’s animated film, featuring the voice of horror actor Boris Karloff to the hilarious Jim Carrey movie, released in 2000, every generation has their very own Grinch. Now, with the brand new The Grinch animated movie in theaters, one of the several film adaptations of books in 2018, many are wanting to know the inside scoop behind the latest voice actor to don the mantle and assume the grumpy, green persona. Here’s our breakdown of the voice actors of the exciting new film!
Who are the voice actors in ‘The Grinch’ remake?
A star-studded voice cast fills out the bill in The Grinch. With Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the title role. Rashida Jones provides the voice of Donna Who, SNL fan-favorite Kenan Thompson voices Mr. Bricklebaum, Angela Lansbury (always and forever Mrs. Potts from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) voices Mayor McGerkle, Cameron Seely voices Cindy-Lou Who, and musical star Pharrell Williams cements his status as a triple-threat by narrating the film.
The story is based around the antics of an irascible Grinch, who plans to ruin Christmas for the cheerful town of Whoville by disguising himself as Santa Claus and spiriting away all their gifts, decorations, food, and holiday cheer. Full of humor and music, The Grinch is a full-tilt holiday delight, helmed by the delightfully cranky green guy himself.
What makes ‘The Grinch’ different from other versions?
The Grinch is by no means a redo of any of the existing movies, although it shares the same title character – this film has a whole new look and feel, and thanks in part to the megawatt voice cast, has earned major buzz. According to iMBb, the Grinch is portrayed as a little less mean in this film and begins the story as only slightly antisocial instead of malicious, as was his portrayal in the Jim Carrey movie. In addition, part of the film’s narration, enunciated perfectly by Pharrell Williams, is in rhyming couplets, as a nod to the Seussian source material.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s past performances
A classically-trained British thespian from an acting family, Benedict Cumberbatch has a long list of credits, from the time-bending Marvel superhero Dr. Strange to the Victorian detective with the mind of a genius, Sherlock Holmes. His breakthrough role was playing Stephen Hawking in a made-for-television movie in 2004, and he has since worked in radio, theatre, television, and film.
Cumberbatch is well-known for his versatility and intelligence, and in addition to his acting credits, he has earned a Master’s degree in Classical Acting and volunteered as an English teacher at a monastery in India. Many of his characters share his smarts, including possibly his most famous role to date, Sherlock Holmes. Benedict Cumberbatch is married to theatre director Sophie Hunter, with whom he shares two children, and a third due in early 2019.
Cumberbatch is relatively new to the world of voice acting, and The Grinch is his second animated film role, after Penguins of Madagascar in 2014. The Grinch might prove to be a good luck charm for Cumberbatch as well, with Boris Karloff being the only other British actor to have voiced the classic character.
