Who Lived in the Frogmore House Before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving! The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are leaving their 2-bedroom flat, Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace for a lush mansion, Frogmore House. The estate is located in Windsor — where the duke and duchess were married, which is about an hour away from London. The royals are seeking privacy as they prepare for the arrival of their new baby and they are also looking to define themselves outside of the Fab Four. A royal insider told Yahoo! Lifestyle, “With their first child on the way, they need and want more space, but they don’t want to live next door to William and Catherine. It’s a bit too close for comfort. They are planning on having separate offices and separate agendas. William and Catherine’s life is going in a different direction than Harry and Meghan’s. The royals know it, and they both want to make sure they aren’t thought of as a package deal.”

So who lived in Frogmore House before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?

Staff housing

At present, Frogmore House is used as housing for members of the British Royal Staff and it’s split into five sperate units. Currently, the estate is undergoing some major renovations so that it can be transformed into a stunning 10-bedroom home for Markle, Prince Harry, and their baby.

. #meghanmarkle #royalfamily #kensingtonpalace #windsor #frogmorehouse

The home was gifted to the couple by the queen, which means the royal staff had to be quickly relocated. When the multi-million dollar renovations are complete, Frogmore will also have a gym, yoga studio, and a nursery for Baby Sussex.

Wallis Simpson’s burial grounds

Markle won’t be the first American-born duchess to grace the grounds of Frogmore cottage. Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor is buried on the grounds next to her husband, the Duke of Windsor—formally, King Edward VIII. Back in the 1930’s King Edward VIII and Simpson caused quite the scandal. Like Markle, Simpson was a divorcee, but she and the king were not permitted to marry. As a result, the king abdicated the crown so he and Simpson could wed and the throne was passed to Queen Elizabeth II’s father, George VI.

Unlike Markle who has stolen the public’s heart. Simpson was not at all well-liked. According to The Telegraph, she was “seen as the wicked witch who nearly derailed the monarchy.” The Brits anger toward the scandal-riddled couple is still long lasting. So much in so that their graves were purposely placed at a distance from the others on the grounds of Frogmore.

Another famous royal couple

Frogmore House’s grounds are rich with history. In addition to Simpson and the Duke of Windsor, Prince Albert and Queen Victoria –who mourned her beloved husband’s death for decades– are also buried on the grounds. However, we’re sure Prince Harry and Markle won’t have to run into any graves on a daily basis. After all, the home sits on a stunning 33-acres of private gardens.

We think Frogmore sounds like a beautiful place for the duo to raise their little one and step away from the spotlight that has shone down upon them since they first went public with their relationship.
