Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was finally saved from MCU-extinction, and with that comes more Spider-Man story possibilities. Some very famous villains make up the Sinister Six and cause Spidey trouble in the comics. Can the Sinister Six make an appearance in the MCU and stir up problems for the Avengers on the big screen? The Sinister Six already exists in Spider-Man movies, with some squaring off with Tom Holland’s web-slinging hero.
Inside the Sinister Six?
In every great superhero’s story, some equally intense villains exist. For Spider-Man, those include the Sinister Six. For those not familiar with the gang of evil-doers, the group is made up of Doctor Octopus, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, and Vulture.
Doc Oc started the team after a particularly brutal duel with Spider-Man that left him in jail without his tentacle pack; he devised a plan to combine forces and create an unbeatable villainous team with those Spider-Man has beaten in the past. He heard back from the aforementioned five, and together they figured they could squash Spidey for good.
As for the evil foes, Doctor Octopus is the researcher-turned-villain via some radiation and a tentacle device. Electro, as his name so subtly insinuates, boasts electricity powers. Sandman turns into sand, making for some messy punches. And, as for Vulture and Mysterio, fans are familiar with the two from Homecoming and Far From Home.
Are any of the members currently in the MCU?
Mysterio is another part of the Sinister Six, and also was the most recent villain to face off with Peter Parker in theaters, played by Jake Gyllenhaal in Spider-Man: Far From Home. And Vulture was the main villain in Tom Holland’s solo MCU debut, Spider-Man: Homecoming.
While the Goblin and his legacy were major players in Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man films, the rest of the Sinister Six already showed up in all cinematic iterations of Spider-Man so far; Doc Oc was in Spider-Man 2, Sandman in Spider-Man 3, and Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The only Sinister Six character that hasn’t shown up in film-form is Kraven the Hunter, but according to Cinema Blend, Jon Watts might be eyeing Kraven to show up in the third Tom Holland Spider-Man movie.
Will there be more appearances in the MCU?
As Looper lays out, there might not be room to create a Sinister Six with the original characters. Reusing villains isn’t a thing the MCU really does, although it’s not out of the question. And since Holland’s Peter Parker has already faced a third of the six, it might be too redundant.
It’s interesting to note that both villains are either alive and in prison — like Vulture/Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) — or suspected alive — like Mysterio/Quentin Beck (Gyllenhaal). Far From Home confirmed Mysterio’s death through EDITH; however, you never know what Kevin Feige may be plotting.
As Looper also pointed out, Mac Gargan was thwarted in Spider-Man: Homecoming on the Staten Island ferry, and shows an interest in teaming up with Toomes in prison. In the comics, Gargan becomes Spidey’s nemesis Scorpion and later a symbiote for Venom. So, even if the original Sinister Six can’t team up, that doesn’t mean another group of disgruntled cronies can’t team up to try and kill Spider-Man in the future.
