Here’s the Character Michelle Williams Will Reportedly Play in ‘Venom’

Michelle Williams is in talks to join Tom Hardy in the upcoming Venom movie, and there’s now some early word about who she would be playing.

According to Variety, Williams is in talks to play a district attorney who is also possibly the love interest of Tom Hardy’s character. This is all we know about Williams’ role in the movie at this time. Tom Hardy, of course, is playing the titular character of Venom.

Williams has not yet been confirmed for the movie, but the fact that she is in talks for the project was reported on Wednesday both by Variety and by The Hollywood Reporter. Variety’s report notes that Sony and director Ruben Fleischer have been meeting with actresses for this part for the past month, and Michelle Williams is the name that has emerged.

Venom is an upcoming comic book film based on the popular character from the Spider-Man universe. Back in 1988, Venom was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 as an alien that bonds with a host and takes it over. Venom’s first host in the comics was Spider-Man himself, and it was seen taking over Spider-Man in the movie Spider-Man 3. But it would later be depicted latching itself to other characters, most notably Eddie Brock, a disgraced journalist who holds a grudge against Spider-Man. Tom Hardy will be starring as Eddie Brock in Venom.

Sony Pictures is producing Venom, and confusingly, this is completely separate from the Tom Holland Spider-Man series. The studio used to own the exclusive rights to make Spider-Man movies, but in 2015, they reached a deal with Marvel Studios that would allow Spider-Man to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony would then co-produce Spider-Man movies with Marvel Studios, the first of which was Spider-Man: Homecoming. Yet rather than stopping there, Sony has decided to produce their own series of Spider-Man films that don’t have Spider-Man in them and that have no relationship with the Marvel Cinematic Universe at all.

In addition to this Venom movie, Sony is also planning to produce a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie called Silver and Black, as well as an animated film about Miles Morales, a different version of Spider-Man from the comics. When Tom Hardy was announced as Venom, the official Sony Pictures Twitter account described this as taking place in “Sony’s Marvel Universe,” which will be separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“It’s not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing … what that will be,” Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts said of Venom. “I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap.”

This role would be a departure for Michelle Williams, who in recent years has focused on performances in prestige dramas like Manchester by the SeaMy Week with Marilyn, and, most recently, Wonderstruck. But she has occasionally dabbled in genre blockbusters, playing Glinda the Good Witch in Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Venom is being directed by Ruben Fleischer (ZombielandGangster Squad)It’s scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018. Just two months later, on Dec. 14, Sony will release their animated Spider-Man film. Seven months later, Sony and Marvel Studios will release their Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, which takes place in a completely different universe as the Sony movies.
