Who Plays Gregory on ‘This Is Us’? Timothy Omundson Returns to TV Two Years After Stroke
This Is Us Season 4 is filled to the brim with new faces. But, chances are, you’ve seen them before. Jennifer Morrison and Omar Epps, who play Cassidy and Darnell respectively, were in House. Meanwhile, Asante Blackk, who portrays Malik, was featured in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us. Now, a new guest star is appearing in the Oct. 8 episode as Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) grumpy neighbor, Gregory. And like the names before him, he may look familiar. So who plays Gregory on This Is Us? Timothy Omundson is making his big return to TV after suffering a stroke two years ago.
Omundson announces his part as Gregory in ‘This Is Us’
In mid-2017, Omundson suffered from a stroke. And although many details were not unveiled at the time, the actor shared his status on Twitter.
“4 weeks ago yesterday since I caught a wee touch of the stroke,” Omundson wrote. “Been knocking it out in rehab.”
Since then, the actor hasn’t appeared in any major projects. But on the morning of Oct. 8, Omundson revealed his return to television on social media.
“Kind of a big day for me,” he tweeted. “Just over 2 years ago, a stroke almost killed me. Tonight, I’m returning to Prime Time Network Television Thanks to @Dan_Fogelman and the great people @NBCThisisUs hope you’ll turn in.”
Who is Gregory on ‘This Is Us’?
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly reported Omundson’s role as Gregory on This Is Us. The publication also teased a clip featuring the actor. And it looks like he’s going to stir up some trouble for Kate and Toby.
In the clip, Kate and baby Jack meet Gregory, who isn’t too pleased about Toby’s parking job. “Could you please tell your husband to stop parking his car in the middle of the sidewalk?” Omundson’s character asks angrily.
Kate then apologizes and explains her husband’s actions. However, Gregory threatens to have Toby’s car towed if they don’t rectify the problem soon. He slowly walks away and Kate turns around a little startled.
Some hawk-eyed viewers might have noticed Gregory was holding a cane in the clip. And of course, this hints at a grander storyline coming in This Is Us Season 4. According to EW, Gregory’s story will reflect the real-life struggles experienced by Omundson himself.
The publication revealed Gregory is a character who is recovering from a major stroke. And to top it off, creator Dan Fogelman actually wrote the role specifically for Omundson. So yeah, we’d say this one is going to be big.
Omundson’s past roles
It’s perfectly understandable if you think you recognize Gregory from This Is Us. Omundson’s IMDb profile shows the actor has been in the business since 1992. Over the years, he has appeared in Xena: Warrior Princess, Jericho, Judging Amy, and Galavant — just to name a few.
The actor also portrayed Seamus McTiernen in the Disney Channel Original The Luck of the Irish and guest-starred in shows such as Supernatural and Criminal Minds. However, you probably know him as Carlton Lassiter — aka Lassie — from Psych. And according to Today, the actor will reprise his role for Psych: The Movie 2 when it debuts in 2020.
Given Omundson’s past, fans will surely be happy to see the actor return to the small screen as Gregory in This Is Us Season 4. Let’s just hope his storyline doesn’t involve a full box of tissues. So stay tuned.
