Who Was at Dakota Johnson’s Birthday Party That Ellen Didn’t Go To?

Talk shows are part of the celebrity experience, especially if you’re an actor. For the most part, they’re civil. Hosts often go out of their way to make silly small-talk and get the guest as comfortable as possible to ensure good answers and a fun atmosphere. But when Dakota Johnson went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in late November, things got awkward when Johnson’s birthday was brought up.

Since then, the internet has claimed Johnson as a favorite and shared memes far and wide about DeGeneres not appearing at Johnson’s birthday. So, what did she miss at the festivities for Johnson’s 30th birthday?

Dakota Johnson’s appearance on ‘The Ellen Show’ went viral

On Nov. 27, Johnson went on DeGeneres’ show to talk about her new film Peanut Butter Falcon. DeGeneres brought up Johnson’s recent birthday on Oct. 4 and stated she wasn’t invited to the Fifty Shades of Grey actress’ party. Johnson responded with, “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen,” which has now become a battle cry for all of Johnson’s new fans.

DeGeneres had pulled dialogue like this last year, Johnson explained, so she made it a point to invite her this year.

Many saw the exchange as possibly shady

Even from the get-go, this could be construed as shady. Especially when Johnson said, “Well, I didn’t even know you liked me” and DeGeneres responded with “Of course I like you. You knew I liked you.” There was a slightly prolonged silence between the two of them after that sentence, and it drove the internet to call it out.

But when DeGeneres tried to say she wasn’t invited, Johnson said, “Ask everybody. Ask Jonathan, your producer.” And alas, it turns out DeGeneres was invited and was “out of town.” “Oh yeah, I had that thing,” DeGeneres quipped. What makes everything juicier is the fact that Oct. 5, the night of Johnson’s party, DeGeneres was at the infamous football game with former President George W. Bush.

Here are the celebrities that did attend Johnson’s birthday party

According to People, Johnson’s 30th birthday was very popular and a ton of people showed up. “Dakota had a huge birthday celebration and she seemed to have a wonderful time,” a source for the outlet said. “You can tell that she is loved because so many of her friends showed up. Even Gwyneth was there.”

Johnson is dating Chris Martin, lead singer for Coldplay, and Paltrow is his ex-wife. They have two children together and judging by what this source said, and what Instagram states, there is positively no bad blood between the two women.

In fact, Paltrow posted a happy birthday message to Johnson on her Instagram, saying, “Happy 30th birthday to this absolute gem 💙”

Johnson’s mom Melanie Griffith was there as well, along with Miley Cyrus, Sean Penn, and Robert Downey Jr. There was a silent disco and Tig Notaro performed a stand-up, as Johnson said on the show.

So, even though DeGeneres didn’t show up to the party, it unsurprisingly was a good time for all there. And no one will ever know if that interview was really shady or just brilliantly planned out.
