Who Was the First Fab Five Member Cast on Netflix’s ‘Queer Eye’?
Everyone has a favorite Fab Five member. It’s what they do together that makes Netflix’s Queer Eye so magical and impactful. After all, what would Queer Eye be without Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, and Tan France? Here’s who was cast first in Netflix’s original television series.
Karamo Brown and Bobby Berk did well in their original chemistry test for ‘Queer Eye’
Following up the original Fab Five from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is no easy task. During an interview with CNN, Emmy-winning casting director, Danielle Gervais, explained how the Fab Five came to be.
“I remember it like it was yesterday. We were all sitting in a room, and we did things like fishbowl questions with them. Fishbowl questions
“Everybody has their turn to come in and we sort of started to see this sort of bond form a little bit with Karamo and Bobby,” Gervais continued. “And then Tan kind of fell into the mix and then all of a sudden, we brought in Jonathan and then it felt like, wow, and then Antoni came in and all of a sudden it was the five of them. It was like putting together a magic puzzle.”
As the first two members cast in Netflix’s Queer Eye, Karamo Brown and Bobby Berk act as the culture expert and interior design expert respectively. Danielle Gervais cast other members of the Fab Five along the way, including Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness.
Tan France and Jonathan Van Ness were the next two experts cast on ‘Queer Eye’
According to Buzzfeed News, Tan France didn’t even plan on auditioning for Queer Eye. The fashion expert was sought after for his Instagram following and was later cast after a chemistry test. With his loud and bright personality, Danielle Gervais cast Jonathan Van Ness next.
Today, each member of the Fab Five shows off their talent in multiple different areas. Karamo Brown released his book, Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope. Tan France premiered his book, Naturally Tan, and partnered with Netflix for a series, entitled “Dressing Funny.” Jonathan Van Ness is working on his figure skating journey, even featuring his love of figure skating in an episode of Queer Eye.
Antoni Porowski was the last cast member added to the Five Fab
Well, excluding Bruley, Antoni Porowski was the last person cast on Netflix’s Queer Eye. The food and wine expert attended a casting call and, of course, bonded well with the other Fab Five members.
Additionally, Antoni Porowski has his own restaurant in New York City, called The Village Den. He’s created his own cookbook, Antoni In The Kitchen, and collaborated with popular LGTQB celebrities like Miz Cracker of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Queer Eye is available for streaming on Netflix.
