Who Will Baby Sussex’s Godparents Be?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their newest family member. Harry and Meghan are expecting a baby in the spring, and there are still so many unanswered questions about Baby Sussex. What is the baby’s gender? What will they name the baby? And people definitely want to know who the baby’s godparents will be. Here are the likely nominations for godmother and godfather.

Harry and Meghan have kept details about their baby very quiet

The couple might be excited about their new baby, but they don’t talk about the pregnancy too much in public. Traditionally, royals tend to keep things very quiet when it comes to pregnancies. The Palace originally said Meghan was due in spring 2019, but Meghan did let it slip that her baby is due in late April. However, she never gave an exact date. The couple also hasn’t revealed the gender of their baby. They supposedly want it to be a surprise (and royals don’t typically know the gender before the baby arrives). Harry and Meghan also haven’t clued us in on who the baby’s godparents will be.

It’s unlikely that Prince William and Kate Middleton will be godparents

One thing is almost certain: William and Kate will not be godparents to Baby Sussex. According to Town & Country Magazine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will already be aunt and uncle to the new baby, so they likely won’t hold the title of godparents as well (this is another one of those royal traditions). Plus, Will and Kate will eventually be the Sovereign rulers, so they don’t need any added responsibilities under their belts. If Harry and Meghan did choose royals to be the baby’s godparents, it likely wouldn’t be royals with such close ties to them or such important roles.

People are eyeing some of Meghan’s best friends

The media has speculated that some of Meghan’s closest friends may be in the running for godparents. Serena Williams just threw Meghan a massive baby shower, so either she’s trying to get the coveted role or she already has it. In addition, George and Amal Clooney, both good friends of Meghan and Harry, could be selected as well (although George Clooney denied he’d play such a role in the new baby’s life). Meghan has several other friends, including Jessica Mulroney and Priyanka Chopra, who might also get the role of godmother. In terms of Meghan’s friends, the godfather role isn’t as clear.

When it comes to royals, Princess Eugenie may land the role

An interesting royal tradition says that most of the time, royals are not godparents to other royals. However, this isn’t always the case. Prince George’s godmother is Zara Tindall, Princess Anne’s daughter. So it’s possible that Harry and Meghan will give the role to someone in the royal family. There has been talk that Princess Eugenie could be Baby Sussex’s godmother. Eugenie and Harry have always been very close, and Meghan and Eugenie recently struck up a friendship, too. It’s unclear right now who will be given the role, but if it does go to a royal, Eugenie is a solid contender.
