Who Wins the Iron Throne? Decoding the First ‘Game of Thrones’ Trailer
With the premiere date for Game of Thrones‘ seventh season pushed back into the summer months, it’s left fans without anything to watch in the spring for the first time in the show’s history. The wait for the premiere feels a little less long now though, thanks in large part to the debut of the first official trailer. In it, we get a handful of details regarding our primary players, where they are right now, and the grim fate that seems to be in store for each of them. Here’s what we saw.
1. Queen Cersei prepares for war
When we last left Cersei Lannister, she was taking a seat on the Iron Throne as the newly crowned monarch of the Seven Kingdoms. And even with Daenerys Targaryen’s army approaching from the east (and while Jon Snow gathers the forces of the North), Cersei isn’t going to give up King’s Landing without a fight. The opening of the trailer says as much, as a voiceover has her noting how “whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it.” Suffice it to say, bold words from someone outnumbered by enemies on all sides.
2. Daenerys takes back her ancestral home in Westeros
This may very well be the biggest reveal the Season 7 trailer has to offer, showing Daenerys Targaryen sitting on the wind-swept throne of Dragonstone. It makes sense too, given a couple factors: First, it’s the closest stronghold to the east, where Daenerys and her army are advancing on Westeros from. And second, it’s the ancestral home of the Targaryen, making it a must-have for our Khaleesi.
3. Littlefinger continues his scheming from the shadows
Littlefinger has made a habit of being one of the most skilled puppetmasters in all of Westeros, and he’ll be employing those skills to the fullest in Season 7. Above, we see him whispering into Sansa’s ear, pointing out how despite her Stark lineage, her bastard brother is the one in charge of Winterfell. It remains to be seen whether she’ll take the bait and betray Jon Snow, but it certainly won’t be from lack of trying on Littlefinger’s part if she doesn’t.
4. Checking in with Arya Stark
Last season, we saw Arya Stark complete her transformation into a full-fledged, revenge-fueled murderer, feeding Walder Frey his sons cooked into meat pies, before slitting his throat and ending his life once and for all. She’s now left to wander the snowy countrysides of the North, likely with the end goal of checking off all the names on the revenge list she’s been reciting since Season 2.
5. Holding out hope for the long-promised Clegane Bowl
Ever since Season 1, fans have been holding out hope for a climactic one-on-one battle between Gregor and Sandor Clegane. It appeared as though we might get it last year too, but those hopes were quickly dashed, as both brothers found themselves on wildly disparate paths. That doesn’t mean we’re not still rooting for it to happen though, especially now that Sandor has joined the Brotherhood Without Banners.
6. Jon Snow has had enough of Littlefinger
It’s tough to see given the darkened corridor, but if you slow down the above scene, you can see Jon Snow angrily shoving Littlefinger up against a wall. If we had to guess, we’d say the new King in the North is fed up with Littlefinger trying to poison his sister’s mind with thoughts of betrayal, and finally confronts him in the catacombs beneath Winterfell.
7. Daenerys’ army goes toe-to-toe with the Lannisters
It’s unclear whether this is at Dragonstone, or somewhere else in Westeros, but it definitely won’t be long until Daenerys and her army happens across the Lannisters. The Lannister crest hanging from the walls in the above frame says as much, as the Unsullied look to be making quick work of Cersei’s men.
8. Things don’t look like they’re going too well for Jorah Mormont
Jorah Mormont was last spotted heading off into the sunset, tasked by Daenerys with finding a cure for the severe case of greyscale he contracted in Old Valyria. If the Season 7 trailer is any indication, he’s been wildly unsuccessful in that mission, assuming the decayed arm we see above belongs to him.
9. A romance brews between allies
Don’t think for a second that our various side characters won’t get their own B-stories. Here we see Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand sharing a passionate kiss, in a relationship that likely began when they both joined forces with Daenerys to take Westeros. We’ll see how mixing business and pleasure goes for them here, but given how cruel the Game of Thrones universe can be, it probably doesn’t bode well for anyone.
10. A tease at another large-scale battle
The Game of Thrones episodes focusing on big battles have typically been some of the best the series has to offer, from Blackwater in Season 2, all the way up to the Battle of the Bastards in Season 6. We’ll get another one this season, with Daenerys and her dragons charging in against the Lannisters. All this happens while the White Walkers gather their forces north of the Wall too, so there’s a good chance this ends up looking like child’s play compared to what’s coming next.
