Whoopi Goldberg Told Bill de Blasio Exactly What to Do With His 2020 Hopes

As the list of 2020 Democratic hopefuls continues growing, the schedule at ABC’s The View has been packed. In the past months, we’ve seen former Vice President Joe Biden, Senators Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand, Gov. Jay Inslee, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (among others) at the table.

Whether candidates like it or not, they basically have to appear on the hit daytime show. In some cases, they walk into the studio knowing the co-hosts have gunned for them in the past. (Whoopi’s take on Beto’s announcement stands out.)

But even candidates who haven’t announced can face the scrutiny of Whoopi, Joy Behar, and the conservative co-hosts on The View. On May 14, the subject of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s potential run popped up at the table. Just as quickly, Whoopi delivered her advice to de Blasio.

Whoopi to de Blasio: ‘Don’t do that, man. Don’t do that.’

The subject arose during a discussion of the crowded Democratic primary field. Meghan McCain mentioned another name rumored to join the pack in the coming weeks. “Our own mayor, de Blasio, is getting in the race,” McCain said.

Right away (around 0:53 in the video below), you hear Whoopi groaning off-camera then saying, “Nooooo.” After McCain says not to “shoot the messenger” on the de Blasio subject, you hear Whoopi simply say, “Don’t do that, man. Don’t do that.”

When the camera finds her again, you see Whoopi grimacing and waving her hand. “I’m just saying, don’t do it,” she said again. Joy tried to point out that New York voters wouldn’t matter much in a national campaign.

But Whoopi wasn’t hearing it. He voice became almost a whisper. “Don’t do it,” she repeated, wagging a finger. “Just … put it out your mind, for now.” Her co-hosts seemed to enjoy it, laughing along with her.

The idea of de Blasio running led to a rare consensus at ‘The View.’

On political topics, it’s very difficult to get the five ladies at The View to agree. (That’s kind of the point.) Between McCain’s very conservative opinions and Behar’s liberal viewpoint, the show has had its share of heated debates.

However, the idea of de Blasio running found the five ladies in agreement — no one thought it was a good idea. (Ana Navarro has replaced Abby Huntsman as the fifth woman on the show as Huntsman prepares to give birth to twins.)

If you’re de Blasio, you might take that as a sign. The show features five ladies from different backgrounds, age groups, and races. Judging by their response today on The View, de Blasio would have none of their votes.

That was a very different response that the one the co-hosts had for candidates like Inslee, Pete Buttigieg, and even Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan. Let’s just say the path forward appears tough for the mayor of New York.
