Why Are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Moving Away From Kensington Palace?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are looking forward to several significant changes in their lives. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned from their first official royal tour together, and now they’ve begun to prepare for a new phase in their lives, welcoming Baby Sussex. The newlyweds have been living in Prince Harry’s old bachelor pad which is a two-bedroom residence, Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace. However, now that they are full-time royals and they are expecting a baby, the duo are quickly outgrowing their modest digs.

Initially, the pair had hoped to renovate a 21-room apartment at Kensington Palace –Apartment 1 which would have put them next door to Prince William, Duchess Kate Middleton and their trio of children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. However, it looks like those plans are on hold for now. This is why the duke and the duchess might be setting up their first family home outside of Kensington Palace.

Some stubborn occupants

To begin renovating the lavish Apartment 1 at Kensington Palace, its current occupants, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester who are Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin would have to move out and find another place to lay their heads. When there was talk about Prince Harry and his bride moving in, the Duke of Gloucester seemed gung-ho about the idea. Now, it appears that he’s changed his mind.

The distinguished couple is in their ’70s, and it doesn’t seem like they’re’ too keen in giving up their “forever home.” Luckily, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex seem to understand that.

Too close for comfort

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also might have their own reasons for considering a home away from Kensington Palace. They are looking to define themselves apart from Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton, the future King and Queen of England, so they’ve decided to start spending less time with them.

A royal insider told Yahoo! Lifestyle, “With their first child on the way, they need and want more space, but they don’t want to live next door to William and Catherine. It’s a bit too close for comfort. They are planning on having separate offices and separate agendas. William and Catherine’s life is going in a different direction than Harry and Meghan’s. The royals know it, and they both want to make sure they aren’t thought of as a package deal.”

Doing things their own way

Though it might seem shocking that Markle and Prince Harry are backing away from Kensington Place, they certainly aren’t the first to do so. When Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton were first married and had Prince George, they lived outside of London at Bordorgan Hall, a country house and estate near the Irish Sea and then Bucklebury Manor, Middleton’s family home.

Markle and Prince Harry are seeking the same independence and privacy. As a wedding gift, the queen gifted the pair York Cottage in Sandringham, and now that they are expecting their first child, it seems like the perfect place to start their family away from the spotlight.

The newlyweds are known for doing things their own way, and choosing where they live is no different. As a source close to the royal family explained, “Harry and Meghan are intent on doing things their own way. One way or the other, they will get what they want.”
