The internet has long been saying that Meghan Markle and Beyonce need to meet. Considering that Markle is friends with other celebrities, like Priyanka Chopra, Serena Williams, and George Clooney, fans thought that she would get along perfectly, and have so much in common with Beyonce. Well, now it’s finally happened.
The two lovely ladies met at the UK premiere of The Lion King. But it wasn’t the relaxed, chit-chat that fans may have been hoping for. Everyone, including Beyonce, was very nervous to meet the royal couple. Here’s why.
Beyonce had to be prepped to meet Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
All the stars of The Lion King had to be prepped by royal staff before they were able to meet the royal couple. Billy Eichner, who voices Timon, explained the experience during his interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
He said each person that was to meet the royals was sent a letter beforehand, with what he described as an “intense” protocol for the encounter.
“You’re supposed to say, ‘Your Royal Highness,'” Eichner said. “You can’t speak until your hands are in a handshake with his.”
He also described the rules for any guests that were along for the meeting. Eichner’s plus-one for the event was instructed to stand behind him and not speak unless he was addressed directly by the duke or duchess.
“I’m not kidding!” Eichner said. “I was like, ‘Does that same rule apply to Jay-Z?’ I don’t know. I have a feeling it doesn’t.”
Given these strict guidelines for behavior, it’s no surprise that everyone was a little nervous, even Beyonce, who Eicher described as, “Our American royalty.” But even Beyonce doesn’t have such an intense set of instructions for meeting her.
Beyonce and Jay-Z paid tribute to Meghan Markle
Another reason why the Queen Bee may have been nervous to meet the British royals is that she clearly respects and honors Markle. In a photo shared on Instagram, and at their acceptance at the Brit Awards for Best International Duo, Beyonce and Jay-Z posed in front of an Elizabethan-style portrait of Markle.
The Instagram caption read in part, “In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.”
Despite the friendly message, The Lion King premiere was the first time these lovely ladies had met.
Meghan Markle was also nervous to meet Beyonce
Before Markle became royalty, she expressed her love for Beyonce on her now-defunct Instagram account.
Markle had posted a photo of herself in front of a brick wall, and a bottle of hot sauce sticking out of her purse. In the caption, Markle wrote, “The closest I will ever come to channeling Beyonce.” She also used the hashtag #hotsauceinmybagswag.
Considering Markle’s previous reference to Beyonce, it makes sense that she would be excited to meet the pop star. Royal commentator, Omid Scobie, told Yahoo UK that when watching their meeting, it was easy to pick up on the nervousness of both women.
“Considering they’re two very confident women, they seemed a little shy of each other,” said Scobie. “And I asked someone before Meghan arrived, ‘Is she nervous?’ They were like, ‘A little bit, but mostly excited.”
Once they had a chance to meet, our American music royalty and the British royal couple talked about parenthood.
Beyonce complimented their new baby, and Jay-Z offered advice to make sure they were taking time for themselves.
It appears that they got along well, but to fan’s disappointment, no word on if phone numbers were exchanged or another meeting was planned.
