Why Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter Were Never ‘Technically’ Married

Before Kaitlynn Carter was photographed kissing Miley Cyrus, she was married to Brody Jenner. For a year, we all watched the couple live out their relationship, but we had no idea they were keeping a big secret about their marriage.

It turns out, Carter and Jenner weren’t technically husband and wife. Here’s how it all went down.

Jenner and Carter first met at a party in 2013. According to Carter, they were drawn to each other right away.

She told People, “He was really honest about what he wanted, no messing around, and I found that really charming and refreshing. Pretty soon after we started dating, I thought it could be for life.”

Jenner felt the same way. He pursued her from the start. “He’s an amazing girl,” he said.

After five years of dating, they married in a beautiful Indonesian wedding.

Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter were never technically married

Although they had a big wedding, Jenner and Carter were never legally husband and wife. They never got around to filling out the paperwork.

During the season finale for their reality show The Hills: New Beginnings, the couple explained what happened.

Their wedding in Indonesia took a lot of planning. The couple knew they’d need to file marriage paperwork in the U.S., but they got wrapped up in organizing the big celebration, and they just figured they’d deal with the legal stuff later.

“We realized like, you know, we just want to focus on being excited about Indonesia and our wedding there,” Kaitlynn said, “so let’s just deal with it when we get back. But we haven’t gotten around to it yet.”

Unfortunately, their relationship ended before the couple ever had a chance to file that paperwork.

Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter split after only a year of marriage

This summer, after just over a year of marriage, Jenner and Carter decided to go separate ways. They announced their split to the public, claiming the breakup was amicable. It wasn’t until after the split that the world learned they were never legally married. This sparked a debate over whether they were ever actually in a relationship, or if it was all made up for the cameras.

However, the couple was quick to confirm that their love was real. “The legitimacy of that marriage has become a matter of public debate, but for he and I, it was very real,” Carter wrote in an essay for Elle.

Despite the legitimacy of their relationship, Carter was fast to move on after the breakup. Only days after the split, she was spotted kissing Miley Cyrus. In the Elle essay, Carter wrote about how she and Cyrus traveled through Europe together while trying to work through their respective breakups.

Cyrus had recently separated from her husband as well. But the two women were drawn to each other, and quickly fell in love.

“Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realized I’d always been drawn to her in a way I wasn’t with other friends,” Carter wrote, “but until that trip, it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense.”

Carter and Cyrus’ relationship may have burned hot, but it fizzled out fast. By the end of September, they were finished. While Carter was falling in love with a woman for the first time in her life, Jenner began a relationship with model Josie Canseco.

However, they lasted only two months, only slightly longer than Carter and Cyrus. But it appears that both Carter and Jenner are now on their own.

This couple always got along really well, and still consider themselves friends. Now that they’re both single again, will they give it another try? Only time will tell.
