Channing Tatum broke out with the dance film Step Up, achieved heartthrob status with romance-oriented flicks like Dear John and The Vow, and has most recently been dominating action comedy with the Jump Street franchise. Now, he’ll continue to prove his willingness to try any genre with the family drama, Two Kisses For Maddy.

According to Variety, Tatum has signed on to produce and possibly star in the tear-jerking father-daughter story, adapted from Matthew Logelin’s best-selling 2011 memoir Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love. The story starts out focusing on Logelin’s marriage and the death of wife Liz, just 27 hours after giving birth to their daughter. It then chronicles the author’s experiences as he confronts his devastating grief and attempts to move forward and raise his daughter as a single parent.

The project was initially set up as a TV movie at Lifetime in 2012. That version did not go forward, but it seems the story is getting another shot on the big screen. As Variety reports, Dana Stevens has already been hired to pen the screenplay for the new, Tatum-produced iteration. Stevens’ past credits include romance dramas Safe Haven and City of Angels, as well as sports dramas like For Love of the Game. She also executive produced 2009’s Julie and Julia. Meanwhile, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey (The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns) are on board to co-produce alongside Tatum.

Should he decide to star in addition to producing, the role would come at an appropriate time for Tatum. The actor became a dad to daughter Everly in 2013 and his own paternal experiences would surely help him connect to Logelin’s highly emotional and tragic story in Two Kisses for Maddy.

For Tatum, the project would be the latest on his increasingly diversified list of credits. The star has already shown himself capable of taking on seemingly every kind of genre. Case in point? Over the last year alone, the actor showed off his dramatic side in the biographical sports film Foxcatcher, chased down drug dealers in 22 Jump Street, and ventured to space in the sci-fi flick Jupiter Ascending (which turned out be a box office bomb). Next up, he’ll also reprise his role as a stripper in July’s Magic Mike XXL.

Tatum will continue proving he can do it all with his jam-packed slate of future projects. The actor has several films set to hit the screen over the next year. He’ll appear as part of the star-studded ensemble cast in Quentin Tarantino’s anticipated Western, The Hateful Eight and will star in the third Jump Street film (which will reportedly feature a Men in Black crossover). He’ll also co-star alongside George Clooney and Scarlett Johansson in the Coen Brothers’ ‘50s comedy, Hail Caesar! and will tackle the superhero genre as Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as his own solo film.

Two Kisses for Maddy isn’t the only new project that Tatum has in the works. Last month, the busy actor also signed on to star in the adaptation of Joe Haldeman’s classic sci-fi book The Forever War.

Audiences will have to stay tuned to see whether Tatum will prove as adept at family drama as he has been in other genres. No projected premiere date for Two Kisses For Maddy has been revealed yet.
