Why Chrissy Teigen Says She’s Quitting Drinking After the Oscars
Chrissy Teigen apparently enjoyed herself a bit too much at Sunday night’s Oscar parties. The model and cookbook author didn’t attend the ceremony, but she and husband John Legend did go to Vanity Fair’s Oscars afterparty. Teigen took full advantage of the free-flowing alcohol, much to her regret the next morning.
Teigen admitted she was “bombed” at the party
Prolific tweeter Teigen was sharing updates from the party, noting that she was “bombed” at the event. She accidentally introduced herself to long-time friend Jon Lovett and stole some shrimp straight from the plate of music legend Quincy Jones. She also shared a photo of herself pushing her husband out of a red-carpet shot.
Teigen returned home at 3:30 a.m. and shortly after seemed to realize just how much alcohol she’d consumed. “Oh my god I feel like absolute sh*t,” she tweeted.
“I hereby go sober for at least the week. Booze is poison,” she said in a follow-up tweet at 3:46 a.m.
Teigen has admitted she’s struggled with drinking in the past
This isn’t the first time the 33-year-old Teigen has spoken publicly about her complicated relationship with booze. In 2017, she talked to Cosmopolitan about realizing that she was overdoing it with alcohol.
“I was, point blank, just drinking too much,” she said. She went on to talk about how the drinking affected her behavior at events like awards shows in a negative way.
“I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show. And then I felt bad for making kind of an ass of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there’s just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It’s not a good look for me, for John, for anybody.”
She says she feels better when she doesn’t drink
In the Cosmo interview, Teigen said there was a history of alcohol abuse in her family. She also admitted it was hard for her to have “just one drink” and said she found it especially hard to resist when temptation at big events like awards shows.
“Everything is there, always,” she said. “I don’t know how to go to an awards show and not drink.” Teigen even brought her own booze to the 2018 Emmys after realizing it was a dry event.
During a wellness retreat in Bali, Teigen said she gave up drinking temporarily, and that the results were dramatic. She was eating better and working out. “I would wake up feeling amazing,” she said.
Teigen has also spoken about her struggle with post-partum depression after giving birth to her daughter Luna in 2016. She used drinking to cope before being prescribed an antidepressant.
“After Luna, I was drinking too much,” she told Women’s Health in 2018. “I wasn’t eating as much because I was full from drinking. I wasn’t being good to my body.”
