There are few reality TV families that are as outwardly wholesome as the Duggars. We first remember them on TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting several years ago, and it all started with Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar and their hope to share the story of their gigantic family with the world. Michelle and Jim Bob are known for their strict religious beliefs and tight rules on their 19 kids, which made for great TV. Now, we’re able to catch up with the Duggars once again on Counting On — and many of the kids are now grown and starting families of their own.
Jill Duggar, one of the older kids, is married and has two kids with husband Derick Dillard. Unfortunately, while Jill was a fan favorite, viewers couldn’t stand Derick — and many even thought he could have been cheating on her at one point. Here’s why.
Derick Dillard started tweeting cryptic Biblical verses of ‘forbidden women’
In November 2018, Derick and Jill celebrated 5 years of knowing each other — and fans were reminded just how quickly the two started dating. In Touch Weekly reminds us the two met due to Jill’s father, Jim Bob, setting them up. Jill flew out to Nepal to meet Derick in 2014, as he was doing mission work there at the time. The rest, it seems, is history — though fans have always had polarizing opinions of Derick. From bashing the LGBTQ community online to sharing strange and cryptic Biblical verses on Twitter, fans have been trying to dissect who Derick really is for years.
Speaking of cryptic tweets, fans were seriously concerned that something was amiss when Derick took to Twitter to share a strange Biblical quote on Sept. 22, 2017. Pop Culture notes the tweet read, “The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.” Just a few weeks later, that tweet was followed with another that read, “He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.”
As one Twitter user commented, “Are you feeling guilty or something?” And another added, “… but yet you support Josh Duggar and he committed adultery…amongst many other sick perversions against children….”
Jill Duggar also showcased a highlighted passage about adultery on her Instagram
Derick’s strange tweets had fans seriously concerned that perhaps he was unfaithful to Jill. While neither Derick nor Jill directly commented about his tweets, in September 2018, fans noticed something off about one of Jill’s Instagram posts that had many thinking Derick definitely cheated once again. The photo showed an open book of proverbs with Jill’s two children behind it. “Praying for my hubby and boys this morning! #proverbs #wisdom” was the quote attached to the photo.
The photo wasn’t too out of place for Jill — but fans noticed one of the highlighted passages was under “Warning Against Adultery” in the book. In Touch Weekly notes one follower commented, “And no one else noticed that she’s praying for her husband under ‘warning against adultery’?”Another added, “I don’t have to pray for my husband to not be adulterous.”
Their relationship could be strained following Derick’s firing from TLC
We certainly don’t know for sure if Derick was unfaithful to Jill at any point, but fans point to his firing from TLC as a reason their marriage could also be strained. We can’t forget how Derick’s transphobic tweets against Jazz Jennings caused a serious rift between him and the network. And while Derick maintains that he and Jill left Counting On on their own accord, TLC made an announcement of their own that stated their truth. “We want to let our viewers know that Derick Dillard has not participated in Counting On for months and the network has no plans to feature him in the future. … TLC is proud to share the story of Jazz Jennings and her family and will continue to do so,” the network wrote.
Jill and Derick seem to be doing well judging from their socials. But fans definitely wonder if their relationship suffered from the loss of the show and any possible financial problems they have experienced since.
