Why Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Start a Family So Quickly?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made headlines for how quickly their relationship has moved. And some sources have said people within Harry’s family weren’t happy with the pace the couple was taking. Not long after the two wed, they announced they’d welcome a new baby in the spring. With Meghan’s due date any day now, she and Harry seem to be running through life. Why did they start a family so quickly?

Meghan and Harry dated for less than two years before they were married

When Meghan and Harry first met, nobody could tell that they’d be married less than two years later. The two were introduced through a mutual friend, and things heated up quickly. Eventually, rumors swirled that Harry was dating an American, and the two went public with their relationship shortly after it started. By November of the following year, Harry had already proposed, and those close to the family said Prince William wasn’t thrilled about Harry’s decision. Will reportedly warned Harry that he was moving too quickly, though Harry clearly didn’t pay attention to his words.

Meghan and Harry had discussed wanting children even before they were married

Kids were always on both of their minds; friends of Harry’s said he’d been ready to have kids for years. And Meghan had talked about becoming a mother someday; she mentioned (prior to marrying Harry) that she had purchased a Cartier watch for herself that she was hoping to pass down to her future daughter. When the two got engaged, those close to them said they wanted to start a family right away, but nobody could have predicted how quickly Meghan would get pregnant.

With both of them getting older, it makes sense they wanted to have kids right away

When it comes to why the two started a family so quickly, the answer might be pretty simple: Because they wanted to. Both had clearly dreamt about parenthood for a while, and with both of them getting older, it makes sense that kids were their top priority. Meghan is 37, and if the couple wants several kids, getting pregnant may be more difficult as Meghan ages. But it goes beyond fertility; the two probably want years to spend with their kids (Prince Charles is 70 and both of his parents are still alive), and they may have figured that the older they get, the less of their own kids’ lives they’ll get to see.

It’s possible that they rushed the relationship in order to have children, but it’s unlikely

Some critics of the family think Meghan and Harry only got married so quickly so that they could start a family. In contrast, Will took his sweet time asking Kate Middleton to marry him. But Harry and Will have always been very different people; Harry has been more impulsive than his brother since the two were young. It’s unlikely Harry only proposed to Meghan so they could have kids sooner; he seems to truly love her, and once he knew that, he figured it didn’t make sense to wait. Now, the couple could welcome their baby any day, and it seems neither of them could be happier.
