There are certain people who you would expect to hang out with royals: other royals, dignitaries, maybe even musical legends like Elton John, to name a few. But, there are also certain people who you wouldn’t think the royals had ever even heard of, nonetheless hang out with.
Former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello falls somewhere in between those two groups. Not that she isn’t talented, but she’s a fairly new star, especially in her solo career, and the music that she sticks to doesn’t exactly seem like it would pique the interest of the Queen.
But recently, Prince William and Kate Middleton proved that they, not only knew who Cabello was, but actually wanted to spend some time with her!
Why did Prince William and Kate Middleton invite Camila Cabello over?
So, Prince William and Middleton didn’t exactly have Cabello over for tea but they did invite her over to help them honor the 10 finalists in the BBC Radio 1 Teen Heroes Awards.
“I was so honored to be invited to Kensington Palace to meet and celebrate this year’s Teen Hero finalists with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” Cabello told the BBC, according to People. “Hearing the incredible things these Teen Heroes have done is so inspirational! Their passion and dedication to help others is amazing and they really blew me away!”
What are the Radio 1 Teen Heroes Awards?
The Teen Heroes Awards recognize 12 to 17-year-olds who inspire others and make a difference in their communities. The program is now in its tenth year.
This year’s winners include Hazel, a 12-year-old who has xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a genetic disorder that limits how much she can be exposed to UV light. At three years old, doctors told her that she should stay indoors. Instead, she has spent her time climbing mountains and raising money for charity.
The winners will be celebrated on Nov. 24 at the Radio 1 Teen Awards.
Shawn Mendes’ encounter with the royals
Cabello isn’t the only pop star who recently had an encounter with the royals. Cabello’s boyfriend Shawn Mendes also had a run-in with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
“I’m half British, so my granddad and my nan were there, so it was a massive deal for them,” he said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show of performing for the Queen.
“I’m in this backstage area and I’m standing there waiting to go on stage and the Queen just walks up next to me. And, you can’t say anything, you’re not allowed to speak to her unless she speaks to you first.”
But, the Queen never said anything.
“So it was like 10 minutes of just awkward silence between me and the Queen. She didn’t look at me at all, I looked over a couple of times and I was like, I probably shouldn’t be looking. It was super weird, she didn’t say anything.”
His encounter with Prince Harry and Markle didn’t go much better.
“I was walking down the hall and I saw them in a room, and they’re just talking,” Mendes said. “And I walked in with this confidence and the second they sort of felt me come in I just turned around and my body went numb and I was like, I can’t do it.”
“I’ve never been so star struck like that, I walked in and didn’t stop, just walked out in one flow of motion.”
